Why a fast resolution is needed in LT saga

There are signs that the LaDainian Tomlinson contract restructuring saga with the San Diego Chargers could be resolved soon.

There are three possible outcomes: 1) Tomlinson will take a new contact for less than the $6 million-plus he is currently due in 2009; 2) he will be traded; 3) he will be cut. Here are four reasons why a fast resolution will be beneficial for everyone involved:

Tomlinson is one of the best players in franchise history: Having this situation fester for more than two months has not been good. Whether he stays or goes, both sides need to know the answer and move on.

The Chargers need to know how to proceed: If Tomlinson is not with the team, the Chargers will likely scour an unimpressive group of free agents or turn their attention to first-round-worthy running backs in the draft. The Chargers have the No. 16 pick and if Tomlinson is no longer in the picture, they will have to consider taking a running back with that choice. If LT's gone, it could also mean San Diego will have to try to sign a linebacker and/or safety in free agency. If Tomlinson is kept, those could be target areas with the No. 16 pick.

Tomlinson needs to find a new home: Money and jobs are taken every day. Tomlinson will have to find a new home if he is cut. Yes, New Orleans appears to be a good fit but still a deal won't be easy to reach and could take time. If Tomlinson is going to hit the open market, it would benefit him to hit it sooner rather than later.

It could become a distraction for other San Diego players: The Chargers meet March 30 for offseason conditioning workouts. If the Tomlinson situation is unresolved by then, players may have to start answering questions they are not equipped to handle. For everyone involved, this situation needs a fast resolution.
