This is a real puzzle to me.

In recent years it has become common practice for teams to display a star above their badge to denote every time they have won a particular trophy, with international teams it's the world cup, Italian teams (and Rangers)1 for every 10 titles, Forest, Celtic and Liverpool the European cup (also occasionally Man Utd on some shirts).

But Man City have 3 stars above their badge even though they have not won anything 3 times (FA Cup 4, league & mickey mouse 2 each, Euro cup winners cup 1)

Does anyone have the reason for this?

According to club history the stripes represent the 3 rivers through Manchester but the stars are just for decoration
