why is that? last game jr had 15 points his final points were a 3 pointer in the third and then he never took anymore shots and hardly played in the fourth, todays game he never had a minute in the second half why isnt scott playin him? hes the best player on the team
It's only been three games into a long 82 game season. I think you're overreacting just a bit abouit Smith's minutes. In his first game against Sacramento, Smith had 29 minutes. In his second game against Cleveland, Smith had 24 minutes, but let's not forget the Hornets lost this game by 22 points. Instead of risking a possible injury to Smith in a virtually unwinnable game, Byron Scott just unloaded his bench. In Smith's third game, Scott played him 22 minutes, but let's not forget Smith shot just 2-9 from the game and went 0-2 from downtown. I didn't see all of the game, but knowing J.R. Smith, his misses could have come from many ill-advised shots. He's also not the greatest of defenders, so perhaps Scott got fed up and decided to sit him down. Also, with Speedy Claxton and Chris Paul playing very well together, Scott saw that that duo was more effective. It obviously was if the Hornets found a way to win this game. This might also be a great opportunity for J.R. Smith to show his worth and step up his game. It's not such a bad thing if he's not always playing in the second half, especially if the Hornets are winning games when he's sitting on the bench.
He won't get more minutes unless he starts to stay in front of the player he's supposed to guard.Last year he just let guys drive past him for an easy 2
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TwinTowers:</div><div class="quote_post">Why doesn't Scott play Dez that much?</div> Has not grasped the system yet. Byron Scott runs one of the most complex systems in the NBA his coaching style is like the west coast offense of the NBA. Desmond was not with the team through training camp, nor the preseason so he has no idea what he is doing. Jamal does not know anything in the Bucks system neither it is obvious if you watch him play with them. Yet they are teaching him in a in game scenario as opposed to in practice.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TwinTowers:</div><div class="quote_post">Why doesn't Scott play Dez that much?</div> You should be able to answer that on your own. Quite simply he doesn't know the system enough to be on the floor for 30+ min. Jamal Magloire on the other hand can be on the floor because he plays a position that basically plays under the basket the entire time he's on the floor. Mason on the other hand can play more than 1 position on the floor, so he needs to know the offense more in depth.
when do you think desmond can start...maybe in week2/3? Also...since speedy has been simply on fire lately...is it possible that byron scott going to start Speedy+Chris Paul and put JR as 6th man?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting hohoyoyoyo:</div><div class="quote_post">when do you think desmond can start...maybe in week2/3?</div> That's really hard to say. When ever he understands the system better, I guess. Maybe in a couple of weeks, but he also has to give Scott a reason to want to start him. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Also...since speedy has been simply on fire lately...is it possible that byron scott going to start Speedy+Chris Paul and put JR as 6th man?</div> That probably doesn't have a chance of happening. Speedy Claxton is only 5'11" and Chris Paul is just a shade over 6'0". The Hornets would give up way too much size to an opposing teams backcourt. They would be posted up by players who are usually anywhere between 6'6" and 6'8". Also, Claxton adds a lot of energy off the bench and gives Paul valuable resting time on the bench. The Hornets want to give J.R. Smith as much time as possible. Time is critical for a young player's development.

And David West and Bostjan Nochbar are not the best players. The best players are Paul, Claxton, Smith, Mason, and Brown. If you need to sub in big men, do that as it's necessary.
thanks for the replies guys (Dr.J and Professor) Just watched the boxscore on hornets/magic game...seems like JR was benched during crunch time and most of 2nd half And again...speedy is on fire Which leads to me thinking...is byron going to basically let speedy play a half and JR a half? I noticed Mason's min being increasing...i suppose that's a good sign, and he finally scored double digits today despite a loss.

i really hope that's the case because i would hate to see JR smith and desmond mason being on bench i meant...that basically would make 2/3 their best players on bench, and wouldn't make sense...especially that you pay $8 million to acquire mason via the trade (i think his salary is $8 million...point me out if i am wrong)
