Well lets be fair now. All of 2013, the OF consisted of Gardner, and some make shift combo of Ichiro, Wells and eventually Soriano. Can the yankees start the season with Soriano, Gardner and Ichiro/Wells again? Sure. But that would mean once again that it isnt a championship type team. I do expect they will sign an OF of some kind at some point. My bet is on Beltran and the shorter and lesser commitment than Choo, and the lack of having to hand over a pick to boston for Ellsbury. I think after reading and digesting all of the comments, i see the yankees going hard for Tanaka (they may lose out to LA though if not careful), hard after McCann (i think they will overpay to get him), resign Cano, and then settle for Beltran over some of the younger options. As far as the bigger moves, that is what i expect. They really should look into getting a decent short stop because Jeter's days and an everyday guy there are done. DH can be a shuffle again. If Tanaka pans out and Beltran holds up (risky), those are pretty significant upgrades to last year's slop. My post was based on the assumption that we are trying to at least be playoff worthy next year. Your point is well taken. If I had my choice, I would sign Ellsbury and not Beltran. I think in Yankee Stadium his power numbers would go up, however losing the pick would happen with Beltran also. I feel your point is that you don't want to Boston to receive our pick. As far as shortstop, 59 brought up Jed Lowrie and when I began to think about it, he makes sense.
I'm sure it's more of a ploy or a way to strengthen their bargaining position when it comes to players they may be interested in like Choo or Ellsbury... I doubt he really believes we are good to go at that (or basically any) position...
^^^yup, been saying it for awhile. It;s not a good idea for any team/GM to publicly make their real intentions known, for obvious reasons.
In my post I said I want to believe its posturing, however I can't trust Cashman anymore. This offseason will prove if Cashman stays or goes next year. If we are terrible, again, with a no fun roster to watch, then I say he is toast.
Right now I am wearing a brown T-shirt, if Cashman were in this room and told me I was wearing a brown T Shirt I wouldn't believe him. As long as Cashman is GM I have only slim hopes for this team.
