This story from the new book on amazon.com titled The Jump... Kobe Bryant would?ve been drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1996 if not for sneaker maven Sonny Vaccaro, who wanted his Adidas client to play in a big market. Vaccaro and his friend, Arn Tellem, who was representing Bryant, hatched a plan to threaten Nets management that Kobe would play in Italy if New Jersey picked the high school star. The Nets blinked, Bryant was taken by Charlotte, and the Hornets completed their pre-arranged deal with the Lakers. Vaccaro admitted that he gained influence in the process by cutting a deal with Kobe?s father, Joe. ?I hired him for $100,000 a year,? Vaccaro said. [red]* Shameless spam link removed. -Mel[/red]
If the nets really wanted him that bad they would have picked him. They could have always if worse came to worse traded him away for more picks. Anyways I think if the story was true, we would have seen this plastered on the front lines sometime 8 years ago. Whatever, should've could've, wasn't.

Kobe and the Nets would have been a bad mix. I am not sure if Kobe would have done great here. Yeah he would put great numbers, but he would give the Nets a headache and Calipari and Kobe would have went at it a lot. I think the Nets were better off not getting Kobe at the time.
Reminds me of Steve Francis and the Vancouver Grizzlies or Eli Manning and the New York Giants. I don't agree with how this goes on because the draft is supposed to benefit the teams picking earlier because more than likely they were the worst teams the past season. But it looks like Kobe's arrogance has worked out for him since he has a few rings to brag about.
