<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Dolphins say they'll deal or release Daunte Culpepper soon, likely by this weekend. Bet on him getting released.

There aren't a lot of teams that have immediate needs at QB. We have heard Jacksonville is interested. I would think Baltimore would at least toss the idea around if Culpepper is released, but they drafted Troy Smith and still have Kyle Boller as the backup. And we know that the Falcons are lying through their teeth if they say that (a) they are not worried about Michael Vick's impending legal issues or that ([IMG] they think they are Ok with Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley as their alternatives.

    But why not Green Bay?

Think about it for a second.

The prevailing thought is that Culpepper rushed back from his knee injury and likely needs a year more to get back to full health. The Packers have a starter in Brett Favre who has a year, maybe two left. But find me a Packers executive who at this moment will go on record to say that Aaron Rodgers is the unquestioned successor, and I'll be very surprised.

Look, it's a roll of the dice. The fact that most teams are set at QB and that most will not invest heavily in a guy like Culpepper works in the Packers' favor, if they choose to show some interest. Assuming Favre has a year left and that Rodgers is not the prospect everyone thought two years ago, would it not be a good idea to have a Plan B other than, er, Ingle Martin?QB Daunte Culpepper

Culpepper is 30. He's a three-time Pro Bowler who has undeniable skills. Maybe he's not a perfect fit in Joe Philbin's offense, assuming it's a derivative of Jeff Jagodzinski's, which is to say a West Coast and zone-rushing attack. But at this point, there are few plum spots open, and Culpepper can't be too picky.

What does work in his favor in Green Bay is that they have two good receivers in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver and a team that could be sneaky good in a couple years. That, to me, seems like a decent fit in that regard.

Maybe Culpepper isn't a cold-weather guy, and I am not even sure Culpepper is a Ted Thompson kind of guy. We know Thompson won't overspend; he'd rather wait a year and draft a QB they can groom. But Culpepper could be a ready-made replacement for Favre, and even if he only sticks for 2-3 years, you could buy yourself some time with a talent that's too good to waste.</div>
Nice to see that someone thinks the Packers can be sneaky good in a few years instead of throwing them under the bus already. For the most part I agree with him. I think Favre has a year left and maybe two. I don't like the chances of this team with Aaron Rodgers. I like the youth on this team but without a steady QB down the road we are going to be in trouble. Favre won't play forever. If Culpepper can even relive half of his skills in Minnesota he'd give the Packers a chance in the future. Granted no way this will happen because the Packers are giving Rodgers every possible chance to be the guy but it is an interesting take none the less and I agree with it.

As I've stated, Baltimore, Jacksonville, & the Rams were the early leading contenders for DC. Culpepper who is his own agent has broken off talks w/ the Jags. I wondered why the Ravens? Then, it dawned on me. Who was the Vikes OC prior to Linehan (now St L coach)? Brian Billick.

IMO Baltimore has all but given up on Boller & Kyle would be better in Green Bay than Daunte would.

I can't see Daunte running the WCO or any hybrid version thereof. He'd be a better fit in SF or San Diego IMO. There are some phin fans who believe he could not hack it in Cam's scheme. Cam's scheme is a derivative of Norv Turner's who uses a basis of the Coryell system in which parts are used by Billick, Linehan, & Martz to name a few.

Green Bay makes no sense what soever, Aaron Rodgers and D CULP both on the same team, eating away cap room. Chances are neither of them will see any starts this season.

Money is not an issue with the Packers since they have plenty of cap room. Culpepper likely won't get big money either. There is a good chance he doesn't play this year anyways. The idea is to have him on the roster and participating in team drills and when or if Favre retires after this year Culpepper and compete with Rodgers in 08 for the starting job. It?s better than having Ingle Martin as your backup plan and like I stated the Packers have plenty of cap room to make it happen if they really want.

There is a reason why Favre keeps being asked to come back. If Aaron Rodgers looked anything like Steve Young did for the 49ers, Green Bay would probably make a move or ask Favre not to come back. The fact is he doesn?t. He looks more like Kyle Boller right and that?s whey names like David Carr and now Daunte Culpepper are being mentioned as possible targets by the Packers so they do have a backup plan.

^ The thing is Steve Young was a total flop in Tampa Bay. The Niners picked him up for security expecting Montana to retire as a 49er and go from there. Green Bay already has a very young quarterback waiting in the midst. Maybe if you Green Bay fans let Rodgers play a snap maybe you guys wouldn't be so quick to throw him under the bus. Have fun wit your team rebuilding partly because of the fans.

So it's the fans fault. Is that who Aaron Rodgers should blame for not playing?

That's a big maybe considering how he has looked in games and on film. I want to see Rodgers show the flashes that Hasselbeck showed here. Matt Hasselbeck was amazing in pre season. You could tell he was going to be a good NFL Quarterback when he got his chance. Aaron Rodgers couldn't hold his jock so far. Rodgers has been all over the place in games. Out of the 8 games Rodgers has played in pre season only one he has looked like he could be an eventual successor to Brett Favre. Every single week he goes out and struggles. In practice he still looks like the worst QB compared to Favre. When Rodgers starts playing better than Favre, then I agree he should be put in immediately. That seems light years away right now because he continues to struggle.

I'll be interested to see how Rodgers does in pre-season this year. Something tells me he's going to be playing a lot more than he has in the past season or two.

He'll get a shot to show what he can do this year...even if the games don't count.

Even so, you need to take in account that Favre is a top 5 qb of all time. The fans are partly to blame. If you don;t believe so, think about being the QB in the waiting, who is getting groomed to take over and half of your teams fans are calling you a bust even before you have a start in the NFL. The truth is this kid will be bust because of fans like you who boo him every time he takes a 4th quarter snap after a wrapped up game. Give the kid a break. You said he is behind in practice, how the hell would you know, are you an NFL scout, no. Almost every player in the NFL looks the same in practice. Theres isn't a huge distinction between receiver 1 and 5 during practice, its what you do on the field. And Aaron Rodgers hasn't had the opportunity to do that. I find it ridiculous how every time any QB makes a small splash at the combine or some average QB with injury problems is on teh market GB fans are ready to jump ship on the guy who is learning behind Favre. People seem to forget Aaron Rodgers was very close top be chosen #1.

Actually, going back to the original thread topic... The reason "Why not Green Bay?" is because Ted Thompson won't give up one of his precious draft picks to sign anyone.

Miami would have to waive him...

Rumor is; Miami won't waive DC until Late July at the earliest.. that is unless the NFLPA says otherwise

On a lighter note, From what you Packer fans have posted, it seems TT is a bright as Wanny is creative.

Aaron Rodgers was never close to be taking #1. The 49ers were using him as leverage against Alex Smith so Smith would come down on his price. Smith never broke so they threaten to take Rodgers who would've signed for a lot less than Smith. In the end they took the better prospect and dished out the money. If Rodgers was the prospect he was made out to be he wouldn't of falling like he did. Not with Miami, Cleveland, and Washington all picking in the top 10 and all needing a QB at the time.

So I'm partly to blame because I boo Rodgers? Let's get our facts straight here and let's not characterize all Packer fans into one. I would love for Rodgers unseat Favre. I don't think Favre is a top 5 QB in the NFL right now. I would love to see Rodgers emerge to that level and if so then Favre needs to retire or get the boot. That's not going to happen. Not because of me. Not because of other fans but because Aaron Rodgers is not at that level. I hope he proves me wrong and I hope Brett Favre proves me wrong but I don?t believe in that to be the case.

Can I ask why Rodgers should be handed playing time? Why shouldn't Ingle Martin get more playing time then? It's what you do in practice that earns you playing time. Brady Poppinga emerged as a starter in practice for Green Bay. As did Mark Tauscher a 7th round rookie OT once upon a time. To state all players look the same in practice is completely wrong. Take the NFL Draft for example. The three things NFL Scouts look at are the combine, college game film, and Senior Bowl Practice film. How do you think Dwayne Bowe got drafted as high as he did this year? The actual Senior Bowl game itself didn't help him but the practices did.

Wanting the Packers to take a stab at Daunte Culpepper isn't because I'm throwing Rodgers under the bus. It's because if Rodgers does fail to succeed Favre the current backup plan is Ingle Martin a 5th round pick last year. Is that what the Packers should have as a contingency plan? What do I know though. I'm not an NFL Scout. Then again neither are you. Though those actual scouts who do evaluate players for their living do agree that Rodgers is more of a project and has a long ways to go so far. That?s enough for even the common fan to warrant concern about him especially consider the long line of Jeff Tedford 1st round busts out there.

DC will never be the QB he was in Minnesota.. Without that #1 guy Culpepper is average at best.. GB can't wait on Favre he is a top 5 QB and sure fire hall of famer.. but not right now he isn't.. I am not saying Rodgers is the Guy but you took him in the 1st round to take over the Job from favre.. Rodgers will forever be known for what he does in the games that matter.. and until he gets that chance noone has the right to call him a Bust.. Pre-season means diddly shit.. Look at Kyle Orton.. Did great in pre-season a few years back.. got into the Game when it counted and sucked up the Joint.. Grossman looked like crap last year in preseason before comming out and lighting it up before he showed his inexperiance.. Rodgers deserves at the least a chance..
