Will This Be Dorrell Wright's Year?

Understand, the goal a year ago in extending a two-year contract to Dorell Wright was not necessarily long-range planning, but rather the fact that a multiyear deal gave the Heat the right to trade Wright in 2008-09.

That didn't happen. Instead, Wright never got right from his 2007-08 knee injury and basically endured a wasted season.

Now, with Jamario Moon gone and not much settled at small forward for the Heat (in the absence of a Lamar Odom signing) beyond the muddle that is James Jones, Yakhouba Diawara and the uncertainly of Michael Beasley at the position, Wright could find himself with another last chance.

He smiled when he was asked if this was going to be his breakout year.

"It's going to be my year if I stay 100 percent," he said. "It's been my year for years. Ain't going to be my year until I go out there and do it."

The problem is a strength deficit remains in his left leg.

"They're not even, because I'm lifting heavy on 'em, so my right is always going to be bigger than my left," he said. "It's just always trying to play catch-up. It's getting there. I'm getting stronger."

Still, after the team's recent summer summer camp, he believes he is headed in the right direction.

"Every week, I feel like I've improved," he said. "I'm learning more. I'm glad I went through this because I really, really, really, really needed it."

In many ways, the skill set that Wright was going to deliver as a 2004 first-round pick was offered in the team's recent camp by 2009 second-round pick Robert Dozier. So the clock keeps ticking. The best of Wright could go a long way for this team, if those skills ever can be maximized.
