Sure, he could get the job done — but what a headache!
"We were running around like a bunch of chickens with our heads cut off in the summer," Williams said of playing for the Jazz's entry in the Rocky Mountain Revue — a July summer league for NBA draft choices, youngsters and free agents, some of whom will never get so much as a sniff at the real deal.
Playing with Jazz regulars in October has proved much kinder to Williams, the University of Illinois point guard chosen No. 3 overall by Utah in last June's NBA Draft.
"Now, it's more structured," he said. "People know more. Obviously, they're better players. So, it's a lot different."
As a result, Williams' confidence has soared — and the Jazz have a tough call to make on just how they will ask the 21-year-old to do early in his rookie season.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, make no mistake, has enjoyed watching Williams grow as a player in the short time he's had him. And there is something special about Williams, Sloan suggests, that eventually may separate him from the pack of NBA points new and old.</div>
