Way back when 1969- Mays still atop Aaron in HR's, when it still seemed possible Mays would break Ruth's HR record, and Aaron maybe not- Banks, F. Robinson and Killebrew still short of 500 HR's; this is the era I loved the most, ie 60's....tho' I've enjoyed every decade less those Rick speaks of, eg 1920's, ... ntm- Other 500 HR's hitters to come: ie, Bonds Jr. , Griffey Jr. , A-Hole, Sosa, McGwire, Pujols, Palmeiro, and 8 others, were either just a twinkle in their Daddy's eye, in diapers; or just getting started, ie Reggie, ... ______________________________________________________ A pre-cursor of crashes to come....Bond's soon became a liability to Mays- Note: this is not the infamous crash both players suffered in Candlestick, which is often noted in bio's of both players. Just one crash out of many.... _____________________________________________________ Speaking of Crashes: Yes, that is Ray Fosse as the backstop- the one Rose crashed into- the following career in the ASG... 1960's decade of the Human Crash Test Dummies.... _____________________________________________________ Last but not least, funny how many of today's youth, (almost anyone under 30) seem to have no clue who Lew Alcindor was- 1969 Article, (as short as it is) - Alcindor's RC 1969/70- Of over 2 dozen guys age 18-32, only One could tell me who this guy was, when shown Lew's first NBA Card:
Which one, Alcindor ? or Rose ? Got to admit whether one was a fan of Jabbar's, his sky hook was lethal, almost impossible to defend, in his prime.... as for Rose/Fosse, and being an ASG hit; that's a bigoted asshole if I've ever seen one.....trying to think who's worse than these two.... or others- ie Ron Artest aka 'Metta World Peace', what a fkng joke, sacrilegious to many... Ndamukong Suh? Denise Rodman...?
Alcindor. When I was growing up in the orphanage they took us for a charity meet & great with several athletes, Alcindor being one of them. Aside from being cold & distant to everyone around him, not one white kid got an autograph. And I've heard that even as an adult his demeanor didn't improve much.
Wow, now that's cold hearted as it gets. I've heard from several Lakers Fans (who attended games) He was beyond aloof, even unfriendly to most Fans, ignoring a lot of kids, during pre-game warm ups, who would of been happy for a simple "hello"... I've heard He was unapproachable as a student at UCLA, unless one was inside his small circle of friends.... At times, the small bit piece he had in the movie Airplane, damn near exemplified his attitude, from what few I've known; who have tried to approach him...
BTW: Rob, no preasure but were ever able to come up with any duplicate Giants cards that you could exchange with me for maybe more music CDs? Mays, McCovey, Marichal, Perry etc.
