Young Willie, the fearsome running back. When I was playing football, I was at safety, some times linebacker when on D. Damn! It would be neat to see him taking a hand off! I saw Willie the first time playing in Portland somewhere, might have been Vancouver, way back. I remember thinking, WTF is this guy doing up there? About the same reaction any time I heard him for the next 15 plus years. Then the geek, grew some bark, came with a tone, and some pretty damn good music too. By 75, he might have been my favorite entertainer. But holy hell, you sure needed to make sure a breeze was working if you went to one of his open air concerts.
I saw Willie a couple of years ago at the outdoor amphitheater in Eugene..he was great! I'd never seen him before and his voice is resonant as ever..his version on Moonlight in Vermont is great
