The Mets celebrated as much as any team could after seven grueling hours, hanging on for a 2-1 win over the Cardinals that felt like a hundred years instead of 20 innings. There was no end in sight until Tony LaRussa’s neuro-processor shorted out, making three baffling decisions that gift-wrapped a victory for Jerry Manuel.

LaRussa refused to use any of his starting pitchers in relief, which meant it was only a matter of time before the Mets broke through. That was Mistake No. 1. The second was lifting second baseman Felipe Lopez, who blanked the Mets in the 18th inning, topping out at 86-mph on the radar gun.

The third was giving the steal sign to Ryan Ludwick in the 19th with Albert Pujols at the plate. Ludwick was thrown out, defusing a potential game-winning rally. Pujols promptly doubled, and the best the Cardinals could do was tie the game against Francisco Rodriguez, who blew his first save of the season.
