"Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday and will be out three or four weeks.

The Red Wings called up Doug Janik to replace Rafalski.

Janik, 30, was to play Tuesday night against the Avalanche at Joe Louis Arena.

Rafalski also had back surgery last summer.

Janik played in 13 games with the Wings last season, earning two assists. Janik will pair with Niklas Kronwall, while Brad Stuart goes with Nick Lidstrom. Babcock will keep the Ruslan Salei-Jonathan Ericsson defensive pairing.

Said Janik: "I'm looking forward to it. Just play simple and have a good game tonight.""
