I'm having one removed tomorrow, so I thought I'd ask
    <ul>
[*]How long will it take to recover?
[*]What will hurt, and how much will it hurt on a scale from one to 10, 10 being the highest?
[*]What can I do to alleviate the pain?
    [*]What should I avoid doing?
    [*]Will my face swell up?
    [/list]

    1) I can't remember exactly but to fully recover probably like a week and a half to two weeks.
    2) It hurts after but during the actual procedure they'll drug you up so it doesn't hurt.
    3) I was on vicodin for several days after so that helps, just eat soft foods and take plenty of pain killers.
    4) Don't get punched in the face, don't bite down on hard foods, there's probably potential for infections too but I don't know to prevent that (keep your mouth clean?)
    5) Maybe your cheeks will swell up for a few days after, can't remember if that was the case or not.

I hate to sound like a smartass, but ask your doctor before you have the procedure done. That's what they're there for.

I'm not an idiot. I was just asking for some anecdotes from the people who has gone through the procedure. Sometimes there is a difference between what the doctor says and what actually happens.

[IMG] Lmao, you should never try to get ounched in the mouth, but this is a very special time, when you shouldn't. I wonder if you told a guy you pissed off and was about to punch you that you just got your wisdom tooth pulled, would he stop? or punch you because it would hurt more. I think it is like hitting a guy with MS or something, but not as bad.

This is a pretty good summary. I had to get 4 of mine removed, and two of them I had removed on the same day. It doesn't hurt too much during the proecude, but it does suck. They're pulling at your teeth and sometimes you do feel it. My cheeks were swollen as if there was a baseball inside my mouth. Ok maybe not a baseball, but a ping pong ball. It hurt for about a week and the swelling lasted almost 2 weeks.

Eat tons of ice cream and apply ice to reduce the swelling. When it's all said and done, it's worth it.

How long will it take to recover?

Usually anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on the severity.

What will hurt, and how much will it hurt on a scale from one to 10, 10 being the highest?

Your face will hurt and remember that pain in the mouth, ears and throat all combine due to nerves. Such as a tooth ache could cause an inner ear pain. It depends on the outcome, 50/50 it will really hurt or not with people. If it hurts a lot I'd say an 8. If it doesn't and you're one of the lucky ones, then it would be a 2.

What can I do to alleviate the pain?

    Relax and wait it out.

    What should I avoid doing?

Picking at anything or eating anything like potato chips.

    Will my face swell up?

Again 50/50. Some people swell up like they have the mumps (if not worse in appearance) or they will be perfectly normal. Again, hope you're one of the lucky ones.

I had my wisdom teeth removed over Spring Break, and I honestly didn't think it was as bad as I expected.

    1. For me, it took only a week, but I guess it varies between people
    2. At first, you'll probably just feel numb, I don't believe I felt anything for the first day. The second day, the pain starts coming. If you bite down, the back part of your mouth will really start to hurt. It was almost impossible for me to eat anything at one point, so my mom just made me some soup with noodles
    3. I think there are medications you can use, but I never used any. Like M Two One said, just relax and wait it out.
    4. Eating anything solid. It hurts when you chew, believe me.
    5. Most likely it will. My face swelled up, but it wasn't that noticible.

Also, right after you get your teeth removed, you'll be a bloodly mess. The dentist will give you a fabric (I have no idea what it's called) to settle down the bleeding. You'll know what I mean when you get it done

I played a basketball game and ate steak the very next day. It's really not a big deal, it's more of an annoyance to constantly clean out the holes in your gums more than anything.

    1) It took me about four or five days to recover from it.
    2) Yes, it will hurt. How much it hurts really depends on the person though. I have a high pain tolerance so, outside of the first day, it wasn't that bad for me.
    3) They'll give you drugs. I got vaikoden, and that works magic.
    4) Again, depends on pain tolerance.
    5) It might.

Also it may not be very bad for you since you're only getting one tooth pulled compared to some people (myself included) who got 4 removed at once.

It's different for everybody. I had to get a triple dose of gas before I was numb but all I felt was my tonsil splitting open. Which wasn't pleasant, but not painful either. The first day was the worst with all the bleeding, and I was back to eating solid foods on day three.

    *Vicodin

    It's a hell of a drug.

Basically, it's a mix of hydrocodone and acetaminophen.

The only pain killer I prefer is percocet. They're similar drugs, as they're both synthetic derivitives of the codeine molecule, but percocet is a mixture of oxycodone and acetaminophen, and oxycodone is approximately 1.5 times stronger than hydrocodone.

Do you have any idea what your doctor is prescribing, Bahir?

Well, had the operation. That wasn't painfull at all, but I guess things will change once the painkiller injections wear off...

The painkiller tablets I got are called Diclofenac T ratiopharm. It contains diclofenacpotassium (?) as the working substance, I guess.

Bummer, that's a very mild anti-inflammatory medicine, not an opiate.

But hey, if it works, it works. You just won't be able to party with them later. [IMG]

Glad to hear everything ran smoothly though.

Do any of you guys know how much the operation costs? I know it depends on like insurance and stuff, but just an estimate with insurance or whatever.

Also, I think I just grew a wisdom tooth in the back of the left side of my mouth. I'm just wondering if it's supposed to hurt or anything because mine doesn't really hurt?

For me, dental care doesn't cost anything until the age of 20, so that's why want to take mine out before that. My wisdom teeth didn't really hurt except for in the beginning when they were coming out.

Day 2 now, no pain in the mouth. We'll see what happens when I eat breakfast.

Depends on your insurance. If it covers wisdom teeth, then it should only cost you the $5.00 or $10.00 co-pay.
