"Tim Jamison quickly found himself with the starting defense, stepping in after J.J. Watt dislocated his left elbow Thursday.

For the fourth-year pro and backup defensive end, there's plenty to do.

"I always have to improve on everything. That's my approach — I'm hard on myself," said Jamison, who has played in 26 regular-season games and both Texans playoff games last year. "Even when my coaches say I do a good job, I'll still find something that I need to work on.

"I can't tell you my strengths or my weaknesses. I just know I want to get better every day."

Watt returned to practice Friday morning with his arm in a sling and could miss the entire four-game preseason schedule. It's not the ideal way Jamison wanted to break into the first unit, but he noted it's the nature of the game.

Undrafted out of Michigan in 2009, Jamison, 26, made his first NFL start the next year in place of an injured Mario Williams.

Jamison stepped in last season when Antonio Smith dealt with a shoulder injury."
