"The Timberwolves have continued a discussion with David Lee's representatives after the unrestricted free agent made a nine-hour visit to Minnesota on Saturday and agent Mark Bartelstein said Tuesday the team could sign his client quickly before all the bigger dominoes tumble in this NBA free-agency game.

The Wolves are believed to have no more than $7 million left to spend after agreeing to terms with Darko Milicic on a four-year, $16 million guaranteed contract and with Nikola Pekovic on a three-year, $13 million deal.

The Wolves likely will have to deal Al Jefferson and his $13 million salary in a three-team sign-and-trade arrangement that includes New York, where Lee has played his first five NBA seasons.

Or they could clear cap room by trading Jefferson to Dallas for Erick Dampier's non-guaranteed $13 million contract and possibly another asset, such as second-year guard Rodrigue Beaubois or draft pick Dominique Jones.

Bartelstein on Tuesday followed what Lee himself said Saturday night as he left town after his nine-hour visit and called Lee's trip a "great visit" with Wolves boss David Kahn, coach Kurt Rambis and owner Glen Taylor.

"They've got some ability to make some moves quickly so they'd have the ability to sign David," Bartelstein said. "They have a lot of interest. Yes, I've been talking to David [Kahn] quite a bit. We're sorting through a bunch of stuff. Hopefully we'll have a decision in the near future."

Lee met with Chicago and Miami on Friday before flying to Minnesota with his girlfriend Saturday morning. Bartelstein also has been talking with New Jersey in case the Nets can't sign LeBron James.

The Wolves probably would have to offer Lee a five-year contract worth at least $60 million to get him signed."
