Alona, Alexandra Win Openers Last year the Polsat Warsaw Open was played mostly under leaden skies and unfortunately the weather picked up where it left off as the first round of the 2010 event kicked off on Monday. But although the rain forced the final round of qualifying and some doubles matches to be played indoors at a different venue, a couple of key contenders were able to make delayed - and ultimately successful - starts to their campaigns at the main Legia Stadium. First to win through to the second round of the $600,000 Premier event, despite the raindrops, was two-time runner-up and No.6 seed Alona Bondarenko. Sometimes mercurial, the Ukrainian is coming off a win over Caroline Wozniacki at Madrid last week and today she handled the heavy clay court conditions better than Italy's Roberta Vinci, winning 63 61 in just over an hour. http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/news/20100517/alona-alexandra-win-openers_2256076_2054313
Li, Zheng Winners in Warsaw The weather was kinder to the Polsat Warsaw Open on Tuesday, but only just, and there were high profile casualties as players struggled to cope with the damp, heavy conditions. Marion Bartoli, the No.4 seed, made an early exit after a positive start, while later in the day eighth-seeded Melanie Oudin was blitzed by Magdalena Rybarikova. No such worries for Chinese stars Li Na and Zheng Jie, the No.3 and No.5 seeds, although the two Australian Open semifinalists won in very different ways. After edging a tight first set against Ioana Raluca Olaru, Li powered home 76(4) 60; by contrast, crafty Zheng pocketed the first set against Olga Govortsova with surprising ease, but ended up fighting for survival, 61 57 75. http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/news/20100518/li-zheng-winners-in-warsaw_2256076_2055054
Wozniacki In, Dementieva Out Elena Dementieva's lead-up to the French took another wrong turn, as she lost her opening match at the Polsat Warsaw Open. Caroline Wozniacki almost followed her to the sidelines but made it through. Dementieva, the No.2 seed at the Premier-level tournament, split sets with Tsvetana Pironkova and twice led by a break in the third but wasn't able to close out the hard-hitting Bulgarian qualifier, losing in just a few minutes shy of three hours, 75 46 64. It was her third loss in five matches since the start of the European clay season, falling early at Rome and Madrid in the last two weeks Pironkova, ranked No.100 in the world but once as high as No.40, picked up her fourth career Top 10 win, having previously beaten the likes of Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and, most recently just last fall, Vera Zvonareva. In a near-upset, No.1 seed Wozniacki was nearly ousted by Polona Hercog, falling behind 3-0 in the third set to the talented young Slovenian player. But the No.3-ranked player in the world showed her mettle, grinding out six of the last seven games - including digging out of a 0-40 hole while serving for the match at 5-4 - to prevail in the two-hour, 11-minute first-time encounter. http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/news/20100519/wozniacki-in-dementieva-out_2256076_2055802
