World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids For those of you like me that are looking far ahead to the next World Cup and so on, you might like to know what countries are bidding for the future. 2018 & 2022 bids Belgium & Netherlands England Portugal & Spain Russia United States 2022 bids only Australia Japan Qatar South Korea Who do you think should host these future World Cups? I originally obviously backed both England (2018) and United States (2022), but I've changed my mind. I don't think the United States is worthy of the World cup because they have no interest in having new stadiums ready for the tournament. Most of the stadiums will be American football or baseball stadiums and most of which look like shit for football matches. To top it off, they left out Chicago from the bids, despite the fact that US Soccer HQ is located on the north side of the city! I'm still strongly supporting England for 2018, even though I'd like to see it in Belgium and the Netherlands as well. The proposed alterations to current English stadiums and the new ones planned are brilliant. I'd love to see the new Nottingham and Bristol stadiums developed. For 2022 I've now backed Qatar. This may seem strange, but hear them out before you judge. If temperatures are your concern like mine were, read this. And finally, the video of their first five proposed stadiums, which swayed my vote and blew me away. Unique and stunning best describe what they have in mind here. Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids Belgium and Netherlands seems like it would be a nice place to see the World Cup in. Also, Qatar's ideas are amazing. Would they actually build those stadiums just for the World Cup? Do they make most of the money they spend on those stadiums back from revenue and stuff from the World Cup? What cities would it be in if they came to the United States?
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids The Belgium and Netherlands bid is led by president Ruud Gullit (current ESPN World Cup analyst) and has some nice stadium proposals including a new one (Nieuwe Kuip) for Feyenoord that would reach 85,000 capacity in Rotterdam. The principle of a federal 65,000-seater stadium has been approved by all authorities in Brussels. About Qatar, from what I've read, the stadiums they're building will stay even after the World Cup is over. The interesting thing is that the upper tiers of the stadiums will be disassembled after the World Cup and donated to countries with less developed sports infrastructure. I haven't seen anything about revenue just yet, but everything else seems very positive. If you guys like the bid, I would definitely back it on their site. For the United States, they proposed having the World Cup hosted in any of these cities: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, Tampa, and Washington. The ones in bold beg the question, why? In addition, many of those cities don't have the right stadiums to host in my opinion.
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids I thought they weren't allowing joint bids--or was that just for Libya?
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids The Qatar stadiums are insane. As for the comment about the US bid featuring American football stadiums, I'd point out that many of the newer ones were also built with international football in mind. Phoenix hosted a US match within the last two years and the stadium looked great. Some cool technology involved as the field actually gets wheeled out of the building to get some sun on the grass, while the stadium can stay domed and cool. As for my preferences, I know the US won't get the 2018, so I'm not too attached to any for that Cup. We're really going for 2022 and I hope we get it.
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids Could they actually build that last stadium? Wouldnt it just be cheeper to watch the game outside?
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids Qatar are absolutely loaded, they have the second highest GDP in the entire world.
Re: World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids With Brazil hosting the next one, this will actually be the first time in the history of the World Cup that they didn't go to Europe for two cups in a row, so, to me, it's already obvious that Europe will get the 2018 show. I would back the Holland/Belgium bid, only because England will have just had a recent Olympics. For '22, I was intrigued by the Quatar bid even before I saw that video, but I would also love to see it in Australia. DO NOT show Jerry Jones that last stadium in the video. He will tear down the new Cowboy dome tomorrow and put that up.
