Interesting, but I don't see how this would work. Never heard anyone talking about it. Can you give us a some more details about your idea?
Gladly Well for one, there should be a FIFA imposed salary cap, meaning every league will have a salary cap prevetning poaching from other teams with big cash. It would also force them to grow their own talent. Now obviously there'll be kinks to work out like the currency and adjusting things in accordance to the league's roster limits but I actually think it'll help out the game of football in the long run. Why not? Take the English Premier in which there are basically only 4 (possibly 5) teams every year who are even competing creating a whole new tier within that league. With a worldwide salary cap, teams like Manchester United or Chelsea will have to beat out other clubs with their minds and homegrown talent as opposed to their wallets. Sorry, still a little drunk so I apologie if that makes no sense at all.
Do you think that would significantly decrease the players salaries? Do you think that with your idea countries like Brazil and Argentina could have stronger leagues and keep the talents from going to Europe?
well I don't have the details worked out yet but I know that the euroleagues are already trying to work things out like that, but (correct me if i'm wrong) due to the EU laws people are going crazy over this proposal. And no, I don't think the salaries should be lowered but i DO believe that there should be a limit towards the obscene amount of money some of these clubs bid for players like the circus....erm.....Real Madrid. I understand that the 'socios' are paying the price, but that's not enough to convince me that a 3-4 team league (essentially) is fun to watch. Think of it this way, why do you think American sports leagues have been so successful in comparison to other leagues around the world? They promote parity. And no, I'm not saying that this'll prevent players from Argentina or Brazil to stay put, but the talent would be spread out far better. Take a look at a club like Ajax who arguably grow the best talents but get picked clean by bigger clubs like Chelsea, Real or Man U. If an idea somewhere along these lines were proposed, the overall quality of club football will rise.
It just wou;dn't work. In principle its an interesting idea, but there would be a breakaway League/federation that would form, funnily enough a lot like what is happening in Formula 1. It's already been threatened that the G14 (I think that's what they're called; essentially the best teams in the world) could leave UEFA over the 6+5 rule. I don't think they will, but they have the potential to do so. If they leave, so will all the best players, so it wouldn't be viable. I really feel sorry for the MLS, as they are the victim in all of this because they have a salary cap whereas we don't in Europe, and because the football market is so much bigger over here, there is no real attraction to playing in the USA other than a publicity stunt (coughBECKHAMcough). It would be great to see what would happen if it was tried (and teams couldn't just upsticks and leave) but to be honest I don't think it's a viable option for the sport.
Ah yes, the G14. How I hate that elitist group. I'd like to see it tried for 5 years and see how everything pans out. I actually like the 6+5 rule, but I still don't think it's enough. I honestly believe that a worldwide salary cap is the way to go. Whether it'll actually be imposed is another story.
LOL at mls. Do you honestly think UEFA gives a shite about mls? They don't care about them at all, Europe just uses America for market so Americans can buy Football uniforms and boots and other shite. Do you see European buy mls football uniforms? Hell no because that is trash.
