Last night World Victory Road hosted Sengoku: Sixth Battle, and low and behold, Takanori Gomi has been upset yet again. In what is undoubtedly one of the biggest upsets of 2008, number two ranked lightweight Takanori "The Fireball Kid" Gomi faced Russian journeyman fighter Sergey Golyaev in a non-title bout. An even fight broke in the second round when Golyaev dropped Gomi with a hard punch, a blow that invigorated the Red Devil Sport Club fighter and propelled him to a split decision victory. The loss is Gomi's second in four fights, having been defeated by Nick Diaz at PRIDE 33 (a result that was later ruled a no contest when Diaz tested positive for marijuana). Also in action was Antonio Rogerio "Little Nog/Minotoro" Nogueira, who faced Moise Rimbon in a showcase fight. Nogueira won a unanimous decision over the French fighter to finish a successful 2008 campaign. In the final showcase bout MMA newcomer Mohammed "King Mo" Lawal defeated Chute Boxe product Fabio Silva by TKO due to strikes in the third round. Middleweight and Lightweight tournament bouts were held at Sixth Battle. Rising middleweight fighter Jorge Santiago defeated Shooto champion Siyar Bahadurzada seventy seconds into their semi-finals fight by heel hook to advance to the finals, while Kazuhiro "Kaz" Nakamura went the distance with Yuki Sasaki in the other semi-final bout. Nakamura won the fight by unanimous decision but would lose to Santiago in the third round of the finals by TKO due to strikes. Santiago pushed his record to 4-0 in 2008 with the two victories and should strongly be considered for fighter of the year. Since leaving the UFC, Santiago has won all eight of his fights by TKO or submission. The lightweight tournament also wound down last night, though the final prize--a title fight against Gomi--has lost its luster. In the grand prix semi-finals Satoru Kitanoka defeated Eiji Mitsuoka by heel hook in the second minute of the first round and advanced to the finals. Like Nakamura, Kazunori Yokota went the full three rounds in his semi-finals bout and couldn't put on a strong enough showing in the finals as a result. Yokota unanimously defeated Mizuto Hirota to advance to the championship round but was defeated by Kitaoka on the judges scorecards. In the two ultimately unnecessary reserve bouts Jorge Masvidal defeated Seung Hwan Bang by unanimous decision and Joe Doerksen defeated Izuru Takeuchi by TKO due to strikes at the end of the third round.
