The New York Yankees won over the Seattle Mariners by a score of 8-5. Starting for the Yankees was Joba Chamberlain and he got a no decision. Brian Bruney got the win even though he didn’t deserve it. I don’t even know where to start with this game. The Yankees won but didn’t look too good doing it. I guess I’ll start with the starting pitcher Joba Chamberlain. Joba gives us Yankee fans a lot of stress even though he’s in every game and doesn’t give up many runs. Tonight he didn’t have his best stuff and he wasn’t locating. He didn’t get hit hard but it’s the walks, the large pitch counts to each batter and lack of holding runners on is what hurt him. He nibbles too much at the plate and put 12 men on base in just over five innings. It seems to me that Joba’s approach to starting is too tone down how hard he throws and nibble every one to death. It drives me crazy. He pitches well enough to go five innings but not enough to get a win. He needs to trust his stuff and throw in the zone more. It’s easier for Joba to throw 95 mph in relief and go after hitters more often. When he did throw 95 mph fastball tonight, he was off the plate. In the early part of the game, the Yankees left a lot of runner in scoring position. This game should of been over earlier. Cano lead off two innings and got a base hit but then got up with two men on and struck out. Once Phil Hughes and Coke came in the game, I thought it was over for Seattle. I said, that’s it, they’re done. Hughes and Coke are too good for them. Then Joe Girardi made an interesting decision. He brought in Brian Bruney after Phil Hughes only threw nine pitches and looked godlike doing it. He was hitting 96 on the radar gun. The game was then tied. I didn’t listen to the post game report to hear what Girardi had to say about it but there’s nothing he could say to defend that move. Hughes needs to reach a certain pitch count and has been pitching lights out and Bruney has been pitching poorly. I thought it was a bad decision by Girardi. However, A-Rod hit a monster bomb and our newest Mr. Clutch, Melky Cabrera doubled home Gardner for the winning run. I was wondering if the Yankees would have what it took mentally to come back and score again after the Mariners tied the game. They did and they won. Player of the Game: Melky Cabera.
