Probably to block toronto but don't be surprised if no deal is made by yanks to give up a player the out of it sox just dump the salary and give him to yanks.

Drob had some scary moments as a closer IMO but if he were back as a set up man it could be OK. Don't remember how much the White Sox are paying him, they spent a lot of money for poor results this season. To include myself many thought the White Sox would make a good run.

I'm not quite sure I understand why he was even put on waivers.

    6-3 with a 2.60 ERA, 27 saves, 71Ks in 52 IP & a WHIP of 0.885. Sorry but I don't see a problem here.

Looking at the Sox Roster Drob is making 10 million a year, highest pitchers salary over Sale & Smardjza.

...it's a flat out "we're throwing in the towel and will rebuild" salary dump...no reflection on D-Rob.

...since the Yanx starters have a hard time going past 5-6 innings, D-Rob/Betances/Miller would make a completely sick relief crew.

Not sure what the White Sox have comingbut between Sale, Drob, and Smardjiza they are paying out close to 30 mil a year. Sale will be retained, don't know how they feel about Smardzija but if Drob goes that is 10 mil off the books. And yeah if Drbob is thrown into the mix it woud help the staff especially with Sevy doing so well.

...as the OP pointed out, I gotta believe that this is simply a move to block the Jays or maybe the Astros from acquiring DRob...the Yanx only have till 2:00 to work out a deal, otherwise the Sox must keep him.

Yeah that was pure blocking strategy.
