Got original post from pryuen at YaoMingMania, who translated the chinese article.

Yao Ming's free throw percentage for his first 2 seasons had been as high as 81%, but it dropped to 78.3% last season. In the playoff series with the Mavericks, he missed a couple crucial free throws during crucial stage of the games.

Aimed to improve his free throw percentage, during the training camp, on top of the scheduled devilish training arranged by Jeff Van Gundy, he took the initative to talk with JVG and Patrick Ewing to arrange additional sessions to practice his free throws.

Yao Ming lives in Windsor Lakes and Park, which is not far away from Toyota Centre. But in order to increase time for his training, he rented a suite in the Sheraton nearby the centre, and did not go home during this week of the training camp. Every day, right after normal training ended , Yao Ming would stay behind to practice his free throws. Under his impetus, Stromile Swift, who had a 71.2% career free throw percentage, also stayed behind on his own initative to practice free throws together with Yao Ming. Patrick Ewing stayed to help them.

Patrick Ewing said: "You just can't but admire Yao Ming's professionalism. If he continues to train like this, his free throw percentage certainly won't go astray.

its awesome to see there professionalism and drive to improve. props to Yao and Swift. even tho 78.3% is not at all bad for a center but thats why I love Yao.... he can shoot the ball.

Good post devin. As others have said, 78.3% from Yao last year isn't really going to raise any eyebrows, but he seemed to be very inconsistent with his shooting from the line. He'd go 14/15 at times and then go 4-8. I don't really mind if he shoots 78.3-80% again, but I'd just like to see him make the free throws at a consistent clip and go for that percentage every game.

Yeah, especially at the playoffs where he missed some crucial free throws i think at game 4 and 5.

This shows those critics of yao that he is as eager to improve as the critics are to see it.

i think what would matter more is yao getting to the line more, let alone improving.

I agree...for as good of a free throw shooter as he is, Yao needs to start getting to the line more...he needs to be averaging about 8-10 FTA per game...his percentage is fine, but it is nice to see him working extra hard in practice...
