has anyone else heard about the documentary about yao ming that is coming out soon? it's called year of the yao and it looks pretty interesting. it's all about yao's rookie season. here's the summary: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Despite facing the odds against cultural and language barriers, the pressure of representing a nation of 1.2 billion, as well as facing Shaquille O'Neal, the NBA's most dominant player, 7ft 6in Chinese basketball phenom Yao Ming succeeds in his first year in the NBA by finding friendship and support in his American translator, strength in the wisdom of his traditional Chinese values, and confidence in his own abilities. Through it all, Yao Ming became the most recognizable figure from China since Mao Tse Tung and a hero to millions around the globe.</div> nba.com also has a page about it here: http://www.nba.com/china2004/year_of_yao_clips.html
Very cool. I'll definitely catch it at theatres when it comes out. Yao's impact on the NBA and North America in his rookie year was unprecedented. He has brought the East and West together and basically kicked the door open for Chinese talent. For example, Yi Jian Lian, a Chinese player who will turn 18 in 2006, is projected by many as the top pick for that year's draft.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Sniper:</div><div class="quote_post">http://www.joeytomatoes.com/nikeyijainlian.htm</div> Yeah, I've seen that commercial somewhere else too. Yi looks like he has a lot of promise. He's a Chinese player who plays the North American style. However, I just looked him up on nbadraft.net and he's no longer a prospect for the 2006 draft. China implemented a new rule last summer that raised the age of declaration for players in China to 22. So Yi will not be able to declare until 2010. Seems like Yao's outburst during the Olympics was part of the reason why, so you could argue that Yao actually closed the door for aspiring young Chinese players.
Awww cmon China. You would think that china would like to be represented in the NBA by more chinese players. Atleast the chinese fans would. I heard that hes 7ft and obviously athletic. If he comes to the NBA he'll be exiting to watch. Its not everyday you see an athletic 7ft basketball player other than ppl like KG and Amare but theyre not 7ft. Heres his nbadraft.net profile http://nbadraft.net/profiles/yijianlian.asp
Yi is born in 1984 accoring to many reports...Might be true, that's why his stocked has dropped so much. He was once projected to go number 1, ahead of Oden, but things have change. Regardless of his age, he should be a keeper.
There are rumors that China doctored Yi's birthdate so that he'd be eligible to participate for them in the younger-level competitions. Yi was on the Olympic team last summer and logged 20+ minutes per game, and put up pretty good stats. Too bad he might actually be able to declare for the draft only when he's 26.
Getting back to the Year of the Yao movie, I found this on the Year of the Yao website. -http://www.yearoftheyao.com/ Despite facing the odds against cultural and language barriers, the pressure of representing a nation of 1.2 billion, as well as facing Shaquille O'Neal, the NBA's most dominant player, 7ft 6in Chinese basketball phenom Yao Ming succeeds in his first year in the NBA by finding friendship and support in his American translator, strength in the wisdom of his traditional Chinese values, and confidence in his own abilities. Through it all, Yao Ming became the most recognizable figure from China since Mao Tse Tung and a hero to millions around the globe. The Trailer is not out yet but i'll post it as soon as I can get it.
as for Yi, there;'s alot of controversy surrounding that doctored birthdate issue, and its a pity that he can't come to the L earlier, but he himself previously stated he knw that he wasn't close to being a good NBa player out of the draft and knew he had alot of work to do before he could get to the draft.
The trailer's been out for a few months now. I just can't wait To watch this MOVIE/documentary about yao's transition from east to west. He's just an amazing person. In the trailer he said, "how do I thank my parents and my homeland?...how does a blade of grass thank the sun?" WOW
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"how do I thank my parents and my homeland?...how does a blade of grass thank the sun?"</div> Correct me if I am wrong, but the answer to that is by Standing Tall, right? Anyways, that movie looks amazing. I thought I was feeling tears when I was watching the trailer. The part when he called Colin Pine a Rookie was hilarious to me. The Movie looks good, I am definitely gonna check it out.
does anyone know if this film will be released in all major theaters or if it will be an independant film kind of thing and only play in some places? also, what is the release date. that yi jian lian nike commercial is pretty exciting. i can't wait to see that kid in the league. he almost reminds me of an asian amare stoudemire. does anyone know where to get any other clips of him?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting magnomonkey:</div><div class="quote_post">Correct me if I am wrong, but the answer to that is by Standing Tall, right?</div> That's pretty much what I was thinking. Basically stand tall and continue to grow (not literally grow in height, obviously, but as a person). I can't get over how cool it is that he uses Chinese proverbs to answer questions. He's truly a unique NBA player.
Trailer is freakin' awesome. I loved the clip where Yao spins starting almost from the free throw line and finishes strong. Yi Jianlian is going to be huge! The fact that he's so mobile for a 7 footer is exciting me!
