...I've lobbied for him all year...this is the kind of passionate players that the Yanx are lacking; http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:9725251
The man has sack, no problem getting in some ones face, smidge of Thurman perhaps. Then get some pitchers that will play a little "chin music" when opposing hitters get to settle in as they like every at bat.
It's easy for a player to have passion on a good team going somewhere, I don't see this as anything special. And Yankee fans wanting McCann should prepare themselves for disappointment IMO, there are better teams that will be after him, why would he want to come to this mess? and he's getting a long deal, why would the Yankees lock up that position for years with so much youth there? C is the only thing the Yankee farm has going for it, I think pass on McCann.
...not sure what you consider a "long deal"...McCann will be 30 before the beginning of next season...4-5 years is all he will get. ...and the Yanx have NOTHING in their farm that projects to being anywhere near the offensive and defensive player McCann is. ...and why would he "want to come to this mess"?...short answer?.....................money, and the Yanx will have it to spend. ...and finally, the Braves season has nothing to do with his "passion"...he's always been a firey and intense player.
The why would a player want to come here argument is made too often and in too many sports. If the money is there and the location is desirable the player will sign.
Stay out of my head, you just stole my post. I agree with it all. We have nothing I repeat N O T H I N G in our farm system that could be to this team what McCann can bring.
Newsflash- plenty of teams have money these days, NY is longer the only place to get paid. And at age 30 being a great catcher, he's getting a good deal, 4-5 years? I'd say anything less than 5 years is dreaming, and again, NY has catchers they want to look at with the hopes of saving some money at the position, not give up on or trade them away. Also McCann is not the picture of health, do we want yet another guy with health problems?
The Yankees completely ignored catcher last off-season and during this season. Can't do that again - McCann should be the first FA this team pursues. It is their most pressing need IMO (albeit, legit arguments can be made for other positions).
Rusty no offense but we can't ALL be wrong. As everyone here but you has mentioned, we need a catcher who can give us production NOW! not one who may or may not be ready 2 years from now. Catching has been a position that the Yankees have needed help on for several years now. And if we have an opportunity to get someone like McCann you jump at it. And I think 4 years at 60-65M should get it done.
Yes the shoulder is a concern, and he did miss some games this year with a knee issue, but sure, give the guy 5 years, great idea. They don't need production from the C position now, they need production from the pitching position now.
to be fair they need help from both. tons of holes to fill next year and the offense is just as big of a worry
Okay Rusty, enlighten us, since we don't need production from the catchers position, who will be behind the plate next year? Sanchez is not ML ready yet & Romine & Murphy are back ups at best. So who? And please don't say Cervelli. I'll wait............
...lol...OK Mensa, let's hear it, why is the shoulder a concern and why are you the only one who sees it as a problem. He didn't miss any games because of it, and his CS rate did not suffer because of it...and his bat certainly did not suffer from it. ...as far as his knee, you might want to research a bit more instead of only reading portions of articles that you googled. His coach gave him a little time off in August because he didn't want to take unnecessary chances. The Braves already had about a 10 game lead and because of that, there was no reason to push a knee that "was a little sore". And he still pinch hit while getting a couple of games off from catching. (catchers do that) And it's not like he went on the DL...but keep on building your stick man. ...and they don't need production from the catching position"?...seriously?...have you been paying attention this year?...at all?...I guess .213 .291 .298 .589 is good in your alternate universe?
If they don't re-sign Cano and don't sign McCann - aside from Gardner and Jeter returning - do they have another major league quality player on offense? Gotta look long and hard.
It doesn't matter, we don't need to waste money on a catcher. Besides I think they're looking into the possibility of bringing Matt Knokes back.
To be honest... Even if they do get Cano AND McCann... this team is a way off from being a legitimate threat... Jeter is a shell of what he used to be, Tex doesn't care that he is deteriorating quickly, A-Rod will be suspended, an OLD of... they'll have an aging and decreped CC, Phelps, and Nova as starters? ooooooooooooo... look out... no Mo, the pitching will be HORRIBLE next year with no one of real value on the market this off season... This team is going to have a long spell of not being in the post season... JMO
