Hickson to Blazers

Seeing that Hickson is a RFA, I like this deal since it gives the team leverage on a guy that has potential. It's the only part about this move that makes sense, because every other move the past week has been such an obvious tank job, it was almost embarrassing. Actually, maybe that's why they signed Hickson. Stern and the NBA saw an obvious tank job, and Portland decided to actually do something constructive for the team

I do have to look back and laugh a bit at the posters a few years ago who were clamoring to trade for Hickson. Did anybody think he'd be put on waivers just a few years later?

He played well in Cleveland. Anyone know how the waiver system works?

I thought any teams could claim him, but the team with the worst record would win his rights. Golden State wanted him, but thought he'd clear waivers and they could just sign him outright. Golden State would've gotten him if they put in a claim since they have a worse record than us.

He will be a RFA I believe. We can choose to keep his bird rights later on, so really there is no risk involved. He can take away some of Przy + Kurt's minutes.

We get essentially a free tryout to see if he has any game left, similar to what we're doing with Flynn and Thabeet.

Actually, this is part of the tank job. The team is resting LA for the rest of the season. Hickson will fill-in now.

Actually, the way LA has played the last few games, and with Hickson playing for his next contract, this might actually improve the team.

LMA had 21/12 last night. I do think they should cut his minutes, though. No need wasting minutes playing for this crappy team, when the idea is to try and make a big impact this summer.

Exactly the kind of move I'd like to see this team make more of in coming years.

I'd keep Hickson's minutes limited. No need to inflate his value by letting him play for a contract if the plan is to match his contract.

I like it.

Same. I can't really see much risk in this. But there is certainly the potential for a reward.

Now, with the current roster....LA, Hickson, Pryz, and a big via draft.... If we could add talented big man (I know I keep beating a Drummond...), re-sign Batum (or acquire another SF) and make a move for a PG, we're on our way.

Hickson averaged 17/11 while shooting 48% in 26 games after the all-star break last year.

As a starter last year in 66 games he averaged 15/10 shooting 46%

You gotta keep this guy moving forward. There's definitely a role for a player like him on this team.

In fact, this guy should get all of Kurt Thomas' minutes as far as I'm concerned. Needs to be given at least 20 minutes a night.

The plan is to evaluate him, which requires minutes.

I like this, so I'm surprised we did it. This will help us only lose by 20 to teams like Milwaukee. He's not going to add wins and take away our precious ping-pong balls, but I think he's got the P-word and I'm much more curious about seeing him play than Hasheem it-only-took-me-a-couple-minutes-to-get-rimchecked-in-Portland Thabeet.

There is enough film on Hickson to evaluate him already, and if he's in Portland next year, it won't be with Kaleb Canales as the coach. At this point, it would be like evaluating him in a pick-up league, because Hickson is coming in with no idea of the offense, and Canales can't put in an offense with no practice time. I'm hoping the plan was to pick him up to keep his RFA status an option, and anything that inflates his value seems dumb to me at this point.

He'd have to put up amazing numbers for his value to be inflated over the next 20 games.

He's not going to get a big offer. It's his 3rd team on his rookie deal. Teams aren't exactly lining up to throw big money at players like that.

Every million dollars counts. Plus, every ping-pong ball counts.

The Kings obviously shipped him and got no good offers. I'd expect him to get a very small deal someplace next summer. Good move.

Oh. For me, picking a player like Hickson off of waivers and then not playing him in fear of inflating his value seems dumb. At any point.

I don't really see the Blazers using all of their cap space to be honest (unless they splurge on a bunch of so-so players like the Suns did a couple years ago, which would just be dreadful).

At 23, if Hickson can show he can be a part of the future here that's all that matters to me. It's all about acquiring young talent at this point, whether in trades/draft/waiver wire etc

I like the pickup. Why not take a look? We always wonder why the Blazers never do this.. and now they did. Now they need to find out how they're going to evaluate Flynn, Thabeet and Hickson over 20 games.
"Evaluating" Flynn, Thabeet, Hickson, Nolan, and Babbitt should be good for at least three extra losses. I hope we are still evaluating Rhino too. He's terrible. :)

Okay who the fuck is this kid and why is he a blazer? I thought we were tanking and cutting salaries? Do we get multi year?

Do we get multi year?

If you're asking whether he'll be an RFA, yes, I believe he will because you picked him up off waivers instead of waiting for him to clear waivers.
