Where to start...
So I'll agree, The Crusade was a lot like Metallica's 80's stuff. It's pretty blatant too, but I didn't care. It was a DAMN good album in my book, so I could give a shit less whether or not they ripped off a band or not. However, take a listen to Ascendancy, Ember to Inferno, or Shogun. NONE of them sound anything like Metallica, at all. So to call them a Metallica rip-off is completely uneducated and you clearly haven't actually listened to them.
A couple things though - Matt Heafy is a far better vocalist than James has ever been, and this is coming from a person who LOVES Metallica and considers them to be my favorite band of all time. Beyond that, Matt and Corey are a far better guitar duo than James and Kirk. I love Kirk and James, don't get me wrong, but just listen to The Crusade and try and argue otherwise. The fretwork on that album is amazing and those two feed off each other brilliantly.
Beyond that, Lars is nothing compared to Travis Smith on the drums. Lars was a fantastic drummer back in the 80's but has since lost a step or two along the way.
Another thing, and I hate to break this to you, but Death Magnetic is a fucking brilliant album. It's very much a mixture of the old and newer school Metallica, and it's amazing. It's hands down their best album since Justice, and I would actually rank it as high as their fourth best album behind Puppets, Ride and Justice.
Hmmm....I really don't know what else to say. And by the way, don't even get me started on metal. I love it. Pantera, Slipknot, Trivium, Metallica, Megadeth, Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. I listen to all sorts of it.
Also, please, PLEASE tell me that the Sabbath you speak of is WITH Ozzy...so, ya know, '70-'78. If you actually prefer anything after that....wow. Yuck.
But, in suffice, give Trivium a chance. Just because one album does ripoff Metallica doesn't mean it all does. Like I said, their other three albums sound NOTHING like Metallica, at all. And really, I think they released The Crusade just to show off their musical talents and to show the world they CAN make something other then the screaming, thrash metal they were making on Ascendancy and Ember to Inferno.
And by the way, Jacoby, do yourself a favor and pick up their other three albums. All are good, with Ascendancy being my favorite of their other three.
Last thing, in regards to Shogun, my favs at the moment are Shogun, Kiriuste Gomen, Into..., and Down From the Sky. All in all though, it's all damn good. I love it, and I'm PUMPED to be seeing them in a week and change.
