Someone is trying to trick people into believing the military is socialist. The military should run itself like it needs to defend the nation from enemy military attacks. I don't see any point in it having any specific free society rules. Nor are compensation forms for govt employees anything to do with socialism.
http://chartsbin.com/view/1887 It states no one in Canada is required to serve in the military, but to be a citizen you must serve 3-9 years.
Sweden doesn't either. That's just off the top of my head. Bottom line is there is nothing with regard to requiring military service. It's what keeps Switzerland neutral.
And I assume you just glanced at countries without conscription but didn't read the notes to the right. Most of those "none conscription countries" require citizens to still serve 15 months to 3 years
Free education for service...what do you call govt benefits for military service then Denny? I'm not tricking anyone..I've served in the military and it doesn't always run itself like it needs to. It's not perfect. It lacks certain democratic choices. I believe whole heartedly in having a military that defends the nation from enemy attacks. The good thing is that we've moved away from the draft. That was a game changer and there have been improvements in military rights, but it's not a democracy
Sweden Compulsory military service abolished, but the Total Defence Service Act will still remain in force and can be applied if required by military preparedness 18-47 years of age for male compulsory or voluntary military service; conscript service obligation: 7.5 months (Army), 7-15 months (Navy), 8-12 months (Air Force); compulsory military service abolished, exclusively voluntary recruitment as of July 2010; conscription remains an option in emergencies; after completing initial service, soldiers have a reserve commitment until age 47; women are eligible for voluntary military service (2010)
I call those things COMPENSATION. The government offers pay, room & board, etc., in exchange for service. It's a contract. Not socialism.
I didn't go over the laws of all those countries but I think it's pretty clear your....Fact...every socialist country has mandatory military conscription..they don't all have it
You said canada, but it clearly states that citizens require military. Then you said Sweden, which also requires military. You haven't given one
