If we sign a big free agent this summer, who would you renounce?

Who would you renounce to accommodate a big free-agent signing?

  1. Gerald Henderson--he's going to command too much for an aging, athleticism-reliant, backup guard

    37.5%
  2. Maurice Harkless--he's too inconsistent to be a reliable rotation player on a championship team

    4.2%
  3. Meyers Leonard--he's never going to develop the mental side of the game necessary to make an impact

    33.3%
  4. Harkless if we sign a wing, Leonard if we sign a big

    8.3%
  5. Henderson if we sign a wing, Leonard if we sign a big

    12.5%
  6. I couldn't possibly care less--none of them are really worth a damn.

    4.2%

Based on this post below, the Blazers will go into free agency with basically 40M in cap space, and the cap holds for the 4 FA's they'll want to keep (Hendo/MyLe/Moe/AC) total about $25M, leaving $15M without releasing a cap hold. If they're fortunate enough to land a big-time free agent, they'll have to renounce at least one of the top three.

Knowing what you know now (and yes, I understand that we may learn more over the next 28 games), if Olshey called you and asked which one of Henderson/Harkless/Leonard should be renounced in order to bring in a free agent, what is your response?

It all depends on our targets. I don't see us being a player in FA as usual, so this might all be moot. If anything, I see more of this asset acquisition stuff where we use capspace to get young players/draft picks.

Gerald for sure. I don't see him as part of our future, and we aren't going to pay him what other teams probably will for him this summer. Harkless is intriguing. I don't see him having a large market out there unless he blows up to finish the season. And his caphold is probably higher than any contract he'll get --makes sense to renounce him as well (and then pay him as a UFA if we want him back). Roberts is not really relevant either way.

We've invested too much time with Leonard to renounce him (and he will get a contract above his caphold #)-- I feel like we'll keep him, even if it's to S&T him. Crabbe's is too small not to keep.

I think Henderson is the only guy besides crabbe that we can't let go of for nothing.

I wouldn't mind if we resigned harkless for cheap.

I'm pretty much done with Leonard. He is going to het paid too much by some other team and I want no part in that

You don't have to renounce anyone until you have an agreement with the FA you want to sign.

If we're about to sign Durant, why would we care which of those guys gets renounced? :)

My serious answer to the question is Henderson if wing, Leonard if big.

Tho I really like the idea of keeping Henderson if we can.

If we retain Leonard's and Crabbe's rights, we'll have like 30 mil of space.

Plenty to throw a max at Barnes or Derozan if we so wished. ugh.

Don't forget CJ's max will kick in a year after.

Is a Dame-CJ-Barnes trio at 65 mil, with 0 cap flexibility appealing to any of you?

I would seriously renounce two of those three (Meyers, Henderson) without hesitation. I don't see any of those three playing major minutes for the Blazers in a theoretical 2018-2019 Western Conference Finals game 7 against Golden State. Harkless I'm on the fence about but would probably also renounce.

Wait... what? You've never seen the Godfather? Please tell me you're watching the original and not the 7hr Godfather I and II mashup on HBO.

Kobe is retiring, we don't need to renounce him.

If I was just picking one, I would renounce the one FA as opposed to either of the two RFA's.
Simply because we could lose Gerald regardless, but we could match Harkless or Meyers if we choose.

LaMarcus already left the Blazers, no need to re-renounce him.

...I am watching the 7-hour mashup on HBO...

But in my defense, it's really awesome! It's like a 7-episode season of HBO TV. Okay yeah, they split out Godfather II into two parts on either side of the movie, but Godfather I is just sitting there in the middle.

I would like to keep Harkless. I think he has a lot of potential and he's still young.

We REALLY should have dealt Leonard and Hendo.

Have you ever seen the Godfather 1 or 2 before? You really need to watch them before seeing the HBO mashup thing. I did watch the HBO thing and liked it, there were some scenes not in either of the original movies that were really enjoyable.

IMO GF2 by itself is much more darker and epic and it is diminished when broken up and shown chronologically. The only reason Coppola reedited the movies into this format is he needed money to finish Apocalypse Now.

We're not talking about roster spots, we're talking about cap space. Un-renounced free agents generate a cap hold that limits the amount of cap space available for signing free agents. As detailed in the OP, at least one, if not more, of our 3 free agents with large cap holds will have to be renounced in order to have enough available cap space to bring in a top-tier free agent.

Now that I have explained that for you, you're welcome to contribute to the thread.
