WHITESIDE, COLLINS RETURN TO PRACTICE, EXPECTED TO PLAY VERSUS NUGGETS

Despite acquiring Hassan Whiteside via trade and signing Pau Gasol this offseason, the Trail Blazers have been a bit short on bigs through the first week of training camp.

Between Whiteside nursing a sprained left ankle, Gasol still rehabilitating the foot he underwent surgery to repair in April, Zach Collins injuring his middle finger during one of the team's first practices and Jusuf Nurkic's absence, the Trail Blazers have only had Skal Labissiere and Moses Brown, an undrafted rookie on a training camp contract, available at center for the better part of training camp thus far.

But after making due in the intra-squad scrimmage at Fan Fest with only a few big bodies available, the Trail Blazers should have more help in the middle in their preseason opener Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as neither Whiteside nor Collins are listed on the injury list. Both players returned to practice on Monday after forgoing contract drills and scrimmages for the last few days.

Assuming both suit up and play, Tuesday preseason opener versus there Nuggets will be the first time fans will have a chance to see Collins and Whiteside, who are expected to starter this season at power forward and center, respectively, team up in there paint.

As for Gasol, he is listed as out for Tuesday's game, though he noted last week that he was hopefully he'd be able to play in at least one of Portland's preseason games.

As for the Nuggets, they too will be a bit short on bigs, as Nikola Jokic (rest management) and Bol Bol (foot) are listed as out.

With most of the roster available for Tuesday's game versus Denver, Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts can now begin tinkering with lineups and, at least in earnest.

"I think this week, these three games, you'll see a lot of different combinations," said Stotts. "I'm really not looking at combinations this week, it's more about getting the rotation so the rotation kinda makes sense so guys can play. I wouldn't read too much into the rotation (versus Denver)."

As he often does, Stotts plans on using the first few games of preseason to see every player on the roster before trimming the rotation down near the end of the exhibition schedule.

"I think tomorrow, the first week of preseason games, letting everybody get some run," said Stotts. "And then next week when we play Utah and Denver, that will be a little different. But tomorrow, hopefully everybody gets in the game."

Just think back to last season’s playoffs and that seven-game cage match between the Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets to get to the Western Conference finals. Portland had to win two games – including Game 7 – in Denver to capture the series.

It was a brutally competitive series that took a lot out of both teams. And they don’t waste any time meeting up again this season. Ironically, because exhibition schedules are made about a year in advance, the teams play a home-and-home preseason series that begins Tuesday night with a game in Memorial Coliseum.

And then, believe it or not, they open their regular season with a game against each other on Oct. 23 in Moda Center.

It’s pretty certain that neither head coach is wild about playing twice in the exhibition season and then opening the regular season against that same team.

Will the competitiveness from that playoff series carry over to these exhibition games? Will players and coaches be able to keep perspective on what are meaningless games?

“That’s a good question; I don’t know,” Portland Coach Terry Stotts said. “Certainly, it is there. It didn’t go away. They might be a little more bitter about it. It might stick in their gut a little bit more.”

Oh yes. In fact, when the Nuggets had their dinner meeting on the eve of training camp, the players were shown a highlight video from last season.

With, for them, an unhappy ending.

“The last clip on our edit last night that we watched was Portland celebrating on our court,” (Denver Coach Mike) Malone said of last season’s second-round playoff exit. “That was it. After that, I don’t think anything needs to be said.”

Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray said the clip will provide plenty of motivation for his team.

“Just know how good we are, knowing we should have won the game and could have won the game,” Murray said. “The only thing we can do about it is go back the next year and be better. That starts right here.”

Stotts doesn’t expect either team to be giving away many secrets during the exhibition season.

“I would not expect either team to show too much in either game,” said the Portland coach. “I would expect both teams to keep it pretty vanilla.”

And it all begins – even thought it doesn’t really count – Tuesday night in Memorial Coliseum.

We will be a different team in late November then in our opening night game against Denver. We will have Nurkic, the Bosnian Beast.

It's game day, wow!

as always with the NBA break it seems like ages since our last game.

I really hope to see Whiteside and Zach, also really curious to see Anfernee after all the summer hype.

Not to mention Gasol.

Look, it's nice the you want to create a lot of threads and post a lot of information, but we have a guy for the game threads and he does a fabulous job so please don't take this away from him

He's called @THE HCP

Never heard of him. Plus, I'm sure he sleeps in 'til Noon.

You call this a game thread?

Time, Channel, Rosters, Graphics....

Where's The HCP when we need him?

This game thread couldn't carry The HCP's [blank] strap.

Collins injured his middle finger during practice? Why is he flipping off teammates?

I have a weekly card game every tuesday night. I told them I couldn't make it tonight so I could watch a preseason game. They think I'm an idiot. And no, I don't want to record it and watch it later. Am I an idiot? About this specific thing, not in general, so don't be a dick.

Cool. I'll get to watch. ESPN

I'd love to weigh in but clearly my avatar precludes me from answering your question...

Wow I did not realize the game was on ESPN tonight. Nice. Staying in Princeville this week and ESPN is one of the few cable stations the condo has.
