OT what to do about kids in the new normal?

thought this might be worthy of its own thread so as not to get too lost in the others. i feel most parents and working parents especially need a plan that they trust to be put forward and implemented in order to be comfortable with a return to schools and daycare. there are other stakeholders in these decisions who's concerns and safety also need to be addressed. from the teachers to the administration staff to the lunchroom staff to the transportation folks to many others i haven't thought about yet. before america gets back to work, what do we do with the kids? huge issue with potentially very bad results if we get it wrong.

localized to hawaii but some of the options for childcare out side the box that are being discussed.
especially important here where grandparents are often the caregivers for working parents. obesity and diabetes in hawaii are off the charts compared to the rest of the country leaving them part of the most vulnerable segment of the population in concern of the virus's impact.

this a link that i posted yesterday in another thread about what happened in france after the first week of allowing some students back. there guidelines included max of 10 kids per class in preschool age students and 15/class for the other age groups. where ever cases were IDed the schools were shut back down for deep clean/disinfected. what is a parent to do in the case where the plan is going to be a start/stop in the case of cases resulting in closures for the cleanings? what about the disparity in the classroom sizes? how will you deal with that?

I haven’t read the links you posted yet, but with the rise of this Kawasaki-like syndrome, I can’t believe that there’s a safe way to do school until we get a vaccine. with cities and states already strapped for cash or even bordering bankruptcy, where is the cash coming from to open schools? provide daycare? here many state, city and county workers are either losing hours in attempts to try and manage budget shortfalls, or furloughed till future notice. seems to be trouble brewing between the federal guidelines and local distribution of funds already.

Right now, my daughter is being allowed to work from home and my son-in-law is furloughed from his job and drawing unemployment . He’s providing childcare while my daughter works. All of that is pretty tenuous. He could get called back to work at any time and then they will have to make some tough choices. He doesn’t want to go back to his old job because it involved working at area hospitals, otherwise known as Covid ground zero. We may have to chip in so he can stay home until there’s a vaccine. Like almost everyone, life is a bit uncertain at the moment.

2. Break class sizes down into smaller groups.
3. Schedule the smaller groups so they physically come into school two 1/2 days a week.
4. Set up lesson plans so there is some in school teaching followed up by video based instruction that they do from home.

If the virus flares up in different areas the kids would only be losing 1 day a week of actual in class time.

IMHO we are back to a question of testing capabilities and are no where near enough capable of doing it.

Same old problem. For such an "advanced" healthcare system, we sure do seem to be having a hard time getting this most basic portion of the response right.

everyday will be bring your kid to work day....and for those without internet access...buy them books...dictionaries and an encyclopedia set...old school...or park them at the library while you're at work if they are old enough...plenty of alcoholic parents do that when they open the pub at 9am anyway.
