What exactly do we need in a new arena that couldn't be added to the Moda?

I would do the following based on the color codes below:

    1) Take the orange max lines and elevate them in that section.

2)In the red section is the max stop for all directions with a platform that continues along the green colors until it meets with the elevation of the moda. Posisbly dropping down to Drexler street, but the East side would likely meet right up to the level of the fire pit, etc, or can be made to be.

    3) create a covered, Vegas Fremont Street style roof over Center ct road. The full length.

    4) in the blue section, create a food court(carts?)/lounge area, possibly stage for bands/entertainment.

    5) where the medical facility is, renovate that to be larger, so the bottom section all the way around can be filled with bars and restaurants.

I think if the max is elevated in that area, it significantly helps the flow of traffic.

Fuck the All Star game, and fuck the Olympics. Well, Olympic basketball, anyway. Silly games, played with silly rules, on silly courts, and (in the Olympics) with a silly ball.

They need to bulldoze the MC - one of the most worthless buildings in all of downtown.

I've been to Boston where they have 300 year old buildings with rooms the revolution started in. Or Europe where the buildings are thousands of years old. Stupid that people talk about the MC being some "historic" site we should keep as though it's similar to any of those.

Yeah, the Coliseum needs to be torn down...but I don't remember seeing where gutting the RG was part of the deal with the new ownership group.

I don't remember anything about how historic the MC was? I thought it had to do with the fact that it is a war memorial (or apparently has a war memorial in the basement)?

I thought Adam Silver said that the Blazers would either need a new arena or major renovations done to the Moda Center?

It was the "design" being unique.

Major renovations does not equal gutting.

It's a fucking cube. It's the most basic design imaginable... How can they make that argument with a straight face?!?

*Granted, it is loud as hell*

It's a unique design, in the sense that's a very VERY 1950's design (I happen to prefer that era of architecture, but I'm a weirdo).

I think it was just people being afraid of change and came up with what they felt was a plausible reason to keep it.

Yup the one good thing about the city falling off in recent years, it’s completely humbled local government. If Portland was still extremely popular best believe they would be playing hard ball with these ideas

It's on the National Register of Historic Places for it's "International Style" of glass and concrete design. By being designated as such, it makes it a huge pain in the ass to tear down

Take the roof off so that they can play basketball in our lovely weather conditions. First ever rain delay in basketball, we could make history.

Actually, there was a game delayed and then postponed due to rain. In 1986, a game between the Suns and Sonics had to be delayed due to rain leaking from the roof of the Seattle Coliseum.

Which if you think about it is crazy.

Seattle used to have an NBA team!?

First off the City Of Portland owns the MC. There was a push to tear it down in 2009 but veterans association and at the time a strong push from former leaders convinced Sam Adams and the city council to keep it. I just don't see Vic Atiyeh (Passed away in 2014) having that pull in 2025. The building was built in 1958-1960 so it's over 60 years old.
The MC is on the National register of Historic Places. Not exactly sure why? What is exactly nationally "Historic" about the MC?
There used to be a group called "Friends of the Memorial Coliseum" but it seems that group has since dispersed as most of the members have gotten so old they are not much of a force or are long since passed.
The Site probably should have been used to build a baseball stadium years ago but It seems that basketball has more pull.

The thing that annoys me about it is how they've spent decent money this last summer doing some upgrades. So to tear it down just further shows how much money they've wasted on it.

It is an ideal spot to put a new stadium (if they can't do something like Lloyd Center), esp if they end up demolishing the RG to make the area even better (two 20K seat stadiums that close to each other makes no sense).

I’m sure there’s a way to memorialize the MC (no pun intended) while making way for something that would benefit present and future generations.

It's veterans. The name is Veterans Memorial Coliseum. So put a nice veterans memorial out in front of whatever they build. This is a no brainer. I'm a veteran and believe me in no way do I draw any significant worthwhile significance from the Coliseum being named Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
