Got abused by Shaq and Amare in the first half but instead of putting his head down he came back and hit some big shots for his team.

This guy gets ragged on when he fails but its crickets when he contributes.
 
He did a great job getting his hands in Nash's face in the 4th quarter.

He also showed no fear going to the basket in crunch time - even though Harris and Carter were tearing it up. When was the last time a young Net had that attitude?

He might not be consistent, but he's consistently confident.
 
I love Yi. He has been steadily improving in all the non-shooting aspects of the game, and I NEVER worry about his shot, no matter what his percentage. When he prepares for the shot properly, he is money. When HE starts to find consistency on both ends, the Nets will truly be a tough team to deal with . . . as if they aren't already.
 
Second half was much better than first one. He deserves it here. Good job.
 
Yi made some shots. He was still pretty bad for the most part though. I fail to see the potential in him. A great shooter, sure, but I certainly don't think his ceiling is very high. He'll be alright, but he's not going to be any kind of star. His defense is unbelievably bad. It's pretty baffling.

Other than his jumper, he's shown nothing. I just don't see it. Anderson is already a better player than him.
 
He had an above average game for Yi, but he still needs to improve his defense.

Anderson is more experienced.

Yi hasn't "shown nothing". That's ridiculous. He's just playing like a guy his age. If he weren't so talented, he wouldn't be playing at all.
 
What has he shown other than the ability to nail open jump shots and get abused on defense?

He's a tremendous rebounder (maybe the best on the team), a good ballhandler for his size, he has good speed, he's extremely coordinated, can get to the rim, create his own shot, he's a terrific passer, he learned the offense quickly and is always open, he has good hands, he is competitive, smart, confident.

Is he all of these things all the time? No. Sometimes he looks awful. He's 21.

If you think he has no potential, you haven't been paying attention. Watch him more closely.

A tremendous rebounder no, an adequate one yes. He does have decent speed but I haven't seen him create his own shot very much. I don't think he has no potential, but I certainly don't think he has star potential.
 
No big-man in this league runs quite like Yi. He runs like a deer.

That's more reasonable. I don't know if he will be an All-Star. I just see a lot I like and so far he hasn't been the least bit disappointing, IMO.
 
I think it maybe worth while for fans to note that Yi is being asked to play a ROLE on the Nets offense. ie to stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting and keep the lanes open for Devin Harris and Vince Carter. Yi isn't being asked to become the star of the team and carry the team's offense. So why are people surprise that he hasn't look to create more shots for himself when that's not the role he is being ask to perform? If people have been watching him closely, you'll see him drive every now and then and stop on a dime and take a turnaround jumper. I mean how many 7 footers do you see being able to do that in the league? In fact let me re-phrase that how many forwards and centers do you see being capable of doing that? Not many. If that's not potential then I do know what is. Once Yi becomes more confident to take players off the dribble and his teammates and the coaching staff have more confidence in him, his game will grow. However right now he is being ask to do simple things because Harris and Carter are the two main players on the team. The team is also winning. So there's no need to expand Yi's role beyond what he is being ask to do at this stage.

well said... i love yi... and your right he isnt the "star" of this team... but if u see, he is a big piece to the puzzle heheh i sound like ian eagle!!!
 
Come on, it's more fun to bash Yi. You all know why.

We can bash Swat, but he hardly get playing time.

No doubt his defense needs to improve. However I can't remember Dirk being able to stop anyone either when he first came into the league. In fact just as Dirk was establishing himself into a good player I saw Duncan abused him to the tune of 53 points. It'll take time with Yi to develop defensively but I believe he will get there.
 
thats why i keep saying that he won't reach star level until year 3 or so. He sure is a work in progress, but like you i see the potential, as do i in Ryan anderson as well.
 
Yi's main problem defensively is strength, focus, and experience. As his body matures and he works to gain more muscle, he will be a SIGNIFICANT defensive presence, especially as a helping big blocking shots. His length and quickness give him the most significant raw attributes to defend well, and he's already had some outstanding blocks this season.
 
Who cares if he will be good or not, at least we have Devin Harris and Brook Lopez.

as long as he is a solid player on this team, it's enough.
 
YI had 1 rebound this game. not acceptable.

when he is aggressive i have no problem with him at all. when he plays dumb i cant take it. hopefully he works on defense and a post game every time he is in the gym.

Well you are potentially talking about a 30/20 player there. Hard for Yi to compete with someone with such a high ceiling.
 
For the last 5 games, here are Yi's stats:

29.2 Minutes 14.6 PPG 1.2 APG 4.6 RPG 2.4 FPG 1.0 TOPG 1.2 BPG 16/18 FT (88.9%) 7/17 3pt (41.1%) 25/51 FG (49.0%) [The Nets have gone 4-1 in the last 5)

Those are some solid ass stats for a sophomore, sure he's had some shitty games, and he has mediocre defense, but you cant deny that he has a shot at becoming a legit 2nd string All-Star 2-3 years from now.

I know Yi's been getting ALOT of hate lately and I can understand, at times his inconsistency can get frustrating for fans....but just look at the stats...stiffs don't put up those kind of numbers as a 3rd option scorer with the likes of D-Harris and VC.

Those are some solid ass stats for a sophomore, sure he's had some shitty games, and he has mediocre defense, but you cant deny that he has a shot at becoming a legit 2nd string All-Star 2-3 years from now.

Great breakdown and anyone that thinks Anderson is better is not watching. I also want to add a 7 footer who shoots 41 % from 3 pt. range and 49 % as a perimeter shooter, I mean yeh that's easy to find. :lol:
 
Yi is Krstic without the well oiled plays that created consistant looks. this is really just a matter of time before he gets locked into set plays. He's a greater athlete than Krstic (pre injury) by alot.
