again, if he didn't pay him that salary, he'd have a cap hold that would cripple our summer plans I believe?

They could have let him go as a free agent, then he wouldn't have a caphold.

I'm not saying they should have, but that was also an option. If they had, they'd have an extra $5 million of cap space this summer or so.

Being under the cap means we can take on an unbalanced trade, so, iirc, we could still leverage a signed player in a sign-and-trade deal.

According to the salary link at S2, Martell's extension starts next season at 4.4M covering 4 seasons toping out at 5.8M. There is a team option at the end of year #2. That strikes me as palatable.

I find it funny that people would site glowing reports of how he's doing in the offseason as proof of anything as every offseason there have been glowing reports about MW... hell, once apon a time M&M relayed glowing reports on Ha. Until I consistently start seeing otherwise, I'll go with the sub-mediocre impressions of his game play that I formed from his overall play rather then fall for another hyping. Dude can hit an open deep shot at a solid clip, but others on the roster have shown that same sort of ability and he's not been very good at anything else. His D is mediocre on a good day, he doesn't dribble/drive, and usually seems to have little impact on the game. I think he's probably the 3rd of the 3 SFs.

I pretty much agree - I think I mentioned that I thought they really thought he would have a breakout year - which would factor into the potential part.

At the end of the day - a bargain given his production to date - it most certainly is not. Will it be? I sure hope so - but until this happens - this characterization of his contract is just not right.

Thanks. This really makes it much more reasonable. I was under the impression it starts at $5m and goes up from there. Thanks for pointing us to the right information.

hey no problem  I find when we have a common set of accurate facts, posters often find themselves with less to disagree about. I'll take this one step further and tell you (and everyone) where to get that link the next time it's needed.

Hit the drop down menu at the top right of any page here at S2 entitled SportsTwo and you'll see NBA Salaries as one of the options

I have to respectfully disagree. When it comes to playmaking, rebounding, and defense, both players are subpar, inconsistent, or both. They both earn an NBA paycheck on the strength of their offense. Webster can hit open 3s. Outlaw can hit open 3s, AND can get his own shot in traffic.

Maybe Webster "should" have been the better, more complete player - but his actual performance doesn't support that.

If you stuck those people together and then cut them in half (perhaps at the waist), you wouldn't get a very good player. Or even a live player. I dare say Webster is better than that.

Easy mistake to make. He wrote "x" not "+"

What you really have to do is look at MJ's best PER year (in the 30s) and LeBron (same) - multiply them (900) and divide by 2. This projects Webster's best year as having 450+ PER. He is definitely a bargain for this production...

Right now, his potential is that he could potentially play again someday.
