Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris was stopped by Oregon State Police for driving 118 mph in a 65-mph zone with a suspended license early Sunday on Interstate 5 south of Albany.

Harris, 20, who will be a junior next season, was spotted at 4:32 a.m. by an off-duty officer, who contacted a trooper patrolling the area.

Harris, who was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima, was cited for driving while suspended and exceeding the speed limit in excess of 100 mph.

By law, being stopped for driving over 100 mph carries a fine of $1,148. It was not immediately clear what led to Harris' original license suspension.

“Last year I was all young, I was lackadaisical and not mature,’’ Harris told The Oregonian during spring practices in April. “Now I know what I want to do, and I’m going to do it.’’

During Harris' time in Eugene coaches have been careful not to laud his game-breaking talents too much – he was named All-American by the Pro Football Writers Association of America after returning four punts for touchdowns, an interception for another score, and leading the Pac-10 with six interceptions – because of those flashes of immaturity.

Oops, Maybe Cliff shouldn't have locked down his accelerator.

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

In all seriousness the part that makes me the most nervous was the 2011 Nissan Altima he was driving. That is going to raise red flags with the NCAA.

Whew, car was a rental.

The trooper issued a citation to Harris charging him with exceeding the speed limit in excess of 100 mph and driving with a suspended license. Harris — an all-American — was driving a rented, 2011 Nissan Altima at the time, police said.

An unidentified passenger in the rented vehicle who has a valid driver’s license drove the vehicle from the stop scene, police said.

I'm just glad no one was hurt. And yes fortunately it was a rental.

murky waters on that. He's in trouble with Chip for sure. Whether the NCAA slaps him and possibly the program further seems a real possibility

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

My dad has an Altima... I'd have to have it pinned going downhill to get it up to 120. That is nuts.

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

I'd be wondering how a college student without a job comes up with 1200 to pay for a ticket (hope mom and dad hook you up?), or how you get a rental car with an expired license. I'm in my 30's with a perfect driving record, and have had problems getting rental cars.

click the link I provided a few posts back.

A couple of thoughts. It was 4:30 in the morning, so at least there probably wasn't many other cars on the road. Also, it's probably a pretty key distinction in the NCAA's view whether or not the friend of Cliff's who showed his license and provided the cash was another football player. If he was a teammate, this seems a pretty clear improper benefit. If not...

regardless, I'm going to expect more bad decisions by young athletes going forward as this sort of stuff happens every year at most every college. I expect Chip will come down on him pretty hard as it seems appropriate for both Cliff and his teammates to see real consequences for bad decisions. I'm guessing he'll be out for at least a game or two + hopefully spend some time doing community work in an emergency room or something that impresses on him the fragility of life.

dang I wish we werent starting out with LSU now lol

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

hopefully he suspends him for the first game....of the pac-12 regular season lol

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

yeah while I would hope that... that just seems to be against how CK works. It would be very SEC of him to suspend him for another time.. but at the same time, I'm not sure that its something I would suspend a game for IMO. But Chip Kelly has my full support in what he chooses to do (not that it matters)

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

apparently he paid an Oregon Staff member(I think the school, not football program) to get the car for him.

Re: Cliff Harris stopped for driving 118 mph with suspended license

did something change? The account I read from the person said that She had rented the car for her own use, and that she was paid the money for them to use it. Which could just be a coverup you never know lol.

No thanks lol.

yeah, I'll just stick with my across the board 10 year+ No Canzano policy. Why would I want to click a link (and thereby enrich) someone who's opinion I don't place any value in?

ouch. Well hopefully Jefferson is still not a polished Passer once the season starts. Chip sure as hell doesnt put a player ahead of the program thats for sure. I'm sure even Tlong can appreciate that? :)

Sigh... This fucking sucks. The Ducks sure have recruited some knuckleheads in the past few years. It's disappointing.

stupid regularly happens at most every school with young entitled athletes... expect it so as to avoid disappointment. Young people fuck up, they always will. The hope is the failures help build the character of the young person and those around them.

full disclosure, in my college days I once drove down to the Bay Area averaging well over 100 MPH. I didn't have a suspended license and wasn't a high profile player on the football team, but I can't look down my nose too much at this. That said, Chip seems to be handling this properly. Hopefully this is the last incident of the offseason.

I'm sure Chip will find some way to help him pay the money by the time of the Civil War game.

I guess someone is gonna have to get a loan.
