Pretty sure Quick said that fame changed Roy. Everything that I saw over his last couple years here would support that. Dame has been a star pretty much since he came into the league, and I have heard nothing to make me think he's a diva. Not one thing. The guy is, by all accounts, a great teammate, a great friend, and a great leader. He's a rare player simply because of his personality and his attitude.
Imagine if we had both Roy and Lillard right now and Aldridge stayed Lillard pg Roy sg Aminu sf Aldridge pf Nurkic c with McCollum, Harkless, Davis and Collins That would be a team that could compete with any team and be a contender
Honestly, I don't really care for Roy that much. I loved him when he first got here, but the guy clearly changed over his four seasons in Portland, and the way exited left a bad taste in my mouth. I think he's overrated, and people look back at him with rose colored glasses because he showed up when times were at their worst, and because he had one really good season. He has been frozen in time because he retired as he was entering his prime.
To me it comes down to this. Portland paid him to retire. He then went somewhere else and played. Then he came back to the NW... and barely acknowledged Portland's existence, let alone being a part of his history and where he made his name. Portland did him solid and he turned his back on us. Fuck him almost as much as LMA.
The guy just seems.... sketchy. He never seemed genuine. Not like Dame. He would maneuver behind the scenes and try to leverage his station to get his way. He supposedly asked the team to trade ZBO, which ended up being a horrible trade. He wanted Steve Blake to start over Andre Miller. He didn't like that we were feeding Oden in the post. Etc etc etc. Can you imagine Dame letting Oden isolate himself and fall into a depression without reaching out and trying to help him? I certainly can't.
Portland forced him to retire before he wanted to admit his knees were shot. We didn't do him a solid at all. I'm sure he felt betrayed
As well as 2 time all NBA. Players who have surgery and play 8 days later in the playoffs is hardly selfish as he was doing it to try and help the team. It can't be easy for a player to have his body let him down and force an early retirement.
Roy preferred Seattle. Just like people from Portland would most likely stay loyal to Portland if they had a job for five years in Seattle. Portland people get so upset when a Blazer doesn’t fall in love with this place. When they do yeah it’s great. But so what. Roy was outstanding until his shitty knees gave in. I love Lillard and he’s been great for a long time, and I love that he loves it here. But now Roy is overrated, a bad person and left a bad taste in people’s mouths?
I think some see him through rose colored glasses. Some think of him and suddenly they think they remember him pissing on their Cheerios. Some recall the great moments along with some frustrations.
Lillard clearly has had the better career, but R0y, at his height, was a clear top 6-7 player in the League. Dame is not there yet, and it might be because the league has so much more talent overall these days.
That's the one thing that gives me pause in saying Lillard is better than Roy. The league is full of players, young and old, putting up historical numbers. How much of it is improved talent and how much is pace and style of play?
