It’s a different time. I think guys that played are more valued now than ever before. It’s not as easy to connect with players in this day and age. Billups would get instant respect. I don’t think a guy like pop would be as easily accepted if he were a rookie coach.
They’ll link articles with players talking about how awesome she is. But they won’t tell you any stats about what her coaching has resulted in improvement wise. “Becky took over the offense / defense and they went from 20th to 10th.” “Becky is responsible for working with Dejounte and DeMar, resulting in improved shooting and increased playmaking opportunities.” don’t expect anything like that.. oh but wait, what time we were working on the pick and roll and she told Murray to throw a bounce pass instead of a chest pass and to get it higher.
He also was responsible for Kawhi and Reggie Jackson, and based on the article, some of the offensive schemes as well. As he told Paul George, “I’m not making any adjustments to our offense until they make adjustments with Gobert; until then, keep going north and south.” It was also stated that he was scheming to “create less iso heavy offense” This would imply he is at least partially responsible for offensive schemes and game playing. Not to mention the direct improvement in playmaking (with stats to back it up). So I mean, quite a bit in there that attests directly to what he has done.
Did you hear anything like this about Monty Williams before he got his first HC job? Or Lue before he got promoted in Cleveland? Hell, how about Udoka? Just because there wasn't a 2 minute profile on her player development work on ESPN in the middle of a game, doesnt mean ir didn't happen
The thing is, it would be an absolute PR nightmare if Dame requested a trade. Much worse ALL around than whatever benefit there would be to hiring Becky. So from a business, basketball and PR standpoint, she’d have to be an absolute dolt. Which I don’t believe she is.
And what background and credentials would those be? That’s she’s worked with Pop for seven years? Is that a guarantee of future success? All I’m saying is this hire is going to make or break the franchise for better or for worse. I’d rather go with the guy that the star player has endorsed on record.
Ive posted about a whole page of articles outlining her background in this thread. Not gonna do it again http://www.sportstwo.com/threads/head-coach-thread.365487/page-50
Ime Udoka has articles about him running the defense for Philadelphia AND the Nets. So yes. And I don’t really know about Monty Williams or Ty Lue. (Wasn’t Ty Lue essentially hand picked by LeBron anyway?) I wasn’t really concerned with who they were hiring as a coach, so I wasn’t reading news articles about coaching searches for other teams. I do recall when Portland last had a coaching search, there were articles about Stotts (the offense, and the championship) as well as Steve Clifford and his defensive prowess. So, from what I recall, yeah… I think this is par for the course. And like I said, the article talked about a lot more than player development.
1000% agree. Magic is dumber than a rock. Chauncey presents himself very professionally and is very articulate, at least from the interviews I’ve seen and his work as an analyst on ESPN.
I’m not against Hammon, for what it’s worth, I just want to know what the fuck she does. We know Billups. We know MDA. We know Udoka. We know Darvin Ham. We know Dawn Staley (although in the women’s game.) We don’t have ANY stats for Hammon. You don’t find that odd?
You may get your wish. It also may result in Dame requesting a trade mid season if things don’t go well. Be careful what you wish for.
Honestly I would rather the team look into Staley more seriously than Hammon. Staley is at least a student of the game from what I could gather.
I don’t even care about what Calvin posted as I think it’s bullshit. I care about stats and numbers; ya know, analytics kinda guy. SHOW ME THE MONEY. And, if we are being honest here, the Spurs haven’t exactly lit the world on fire since Hammon has been lead assistant. (Which again, doesn’t really matter to me if we know what the hell she is responsible for. Things are deeper than just team record.)
