    Excerpts for those too lazy:

Another argument that I’ve seen tossed around — maybe even sillier than the previous one — is that Becky rose to her current position because having her on staff was “good p.r.” for the Spurs.

    What?

    Seriously: What?

No. We’re talking about the NBA here — a business where there’s a lot of money on the line, and little patience for mediocrity. Also we’re talking about the San Antonio Spurs, one of the most successful NBA franchises of this century: a system that has produced David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, Tony Parker — and that’s just the Hall of Famers. This is a team that won 50+ games for 18-straight seasons, and five championships in the last 20 years.

Would you really expect Coach Pop to develop his staff any differently than he develops his players? Of course not.

Pop’s only standard for doing anything is whether it’ll help us in just one way … and it isn’t getting good p.r.

It’s getting W’s. And getting those W’s The Spurs Way.

what incentive does Pau have to lie? that's ridiculous. Pau is a hundred millionaire living a dream life. he has no reason to pen this kinda article about someone who apparently is laughed at internally and has no chops.

What I would like to do, though, is knock down a few of the silly arguments and talking points against Coach Hammon’s candidacy — and the larger idea of a female NBA head coach — that I’ve seen floating around.

The argument that I see most often is thankfully the one that’s easiest to disprove: It’s this idea that, at the absolute highest level of basketball, a woman isn’t capable of coaching men. “Yeah, female coaches are fine coaching women’s college basketball, or the WNBA,” the argument goes. “But the NBA? The NBA is different.”

First, I’ve just gotta tell you: If you’re making that argument to anyone who’s actually played any high-level basketball, you’re going to seem really ignorant. But I also have a simple response to it — which is that I’ve been in the NBA for 17 years. I’ve won two championships … I’ve played with some of the best players of this generation … and I’ve played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. And I’m telling you: Becky Hammon can coach. I’m not saying she can coach pretty well. I’m not saying she can coach enough to get by. I’m not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA’s male coaches. I’m saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period.

I’ll tell you a quick story to illustrate my point. This year, in a practice a few months back, I was drilling the pick-and-roll with Dejounte Murray. It was a standard drill, just the two of us alone at one basket: I would set the screen and either pop out for the jumper or roll to the lane. If I popped, Dejounte would hit me with a chest pass. If I rolled, a bounce pass. Like I said, a very standard drill — we’ll do this a million times.

But what I remember about this particular drill is that, at some point during it, Coach Hammon stopped us mid-motion. Coaches Hammon, Borrego and Messina walk over, and Becky says to Dejounte, “D.J., O.K. — your bounce pass? It’s too low. You’ve got to hit Pau exactly where he needs it. Run that again.” We then talk some more as a group about how I need the ball a little more precise, with a little more zip, so I could have a better chance to finish the action at the rim. And then we repeat the drill a few times, alternating from the left and right sides of court. Of course, Dejounte being Dejounte, he figures it out fast — and pretty soon we’re flying through. But something about that moment has just always stuck with me. Just, like … the level of knowledge of the game that Becky showed, you know what I mean?

She noticed a small detail out of the corner of her eye — and then instantly located both the problem and the solution. And not only that, but we were also able to communicate with each other in such a way that we got the result that we needed. It’s a good reminder, I’d say, of the importance of communication between team members — especially at the NBA level. I don’t think I caught another stray pass the rest of the season.

    More https://theathletic.com/2333024/2021/03/08/becky-hammon-san-antonio-spurs-nba-coach/

Andre Miller, a point guard in the NBA for 17 seasons, played his last year in the league in San Antonio in 2016. He’d known Hammon, the star point guard, the sharp-shooting 3-point threat, the perennial All-Star, but Miller never knew Hammon the coach. No one did until they were signed by the Spurs. From the outset, Miller knew that Hammon was going to be able to direct a game from the sideline just like she did through the prism of being a point guard: obsessed with the details, not wanting to concede an inch. Miller remembers his time working with her and said she sees the game from a coaching perspective through the lens of a point guard.

“Oh she’s going to definitely be the first female NBA head coach,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time. I wouldn’t be surprised that when Pop does decide to retire that she’d be next in line. It’s a perfect situation. She knows the community, she knows management, and she’s reliable and she expects it. It’s easy to make that transition. She’s primed and ready.” (For the record, several of Popovich’s former assistants and players have gone on to be NBA coaches and two are general managers.)

I'm not saying he's lying. I'm sure he does respect her.

I'm saying I trust calvin natt's info more than I trust anything Pau perceives or believes. Pau has never shared correct inside info with me before.

Calvin natt has done exactly that, many times, over nearly two decades.

You're not going to be able to find a link that makes that fact any less true.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...coaches-becky-hammon-breakthrough/4141408001/

NBA players on a team with a woman’s assistant said they would have no problem with a female head coach. San Antonio guard DeMar DeRozan said, "When she speaks we are all ears."

Across social media, NBA players, including Steph Curry, Ja Morant and Andre Drummond, took note of Hammon coaching after Popovich's ejection.

“Becky’s in a spot now where she’s in a position of power,” Spurs guard Patty Mills told USA TODAY Sports. “She’s able to direct guys on what to do and that all comes from work ethic and what she does behind the scenes and getting herself and our team ready for games. She is an NBA coach who knows her (expletive) and gets it done.”

"Her knowledge of the game, the ins-and-outs of the game, is the reason why she’s in the position she is," Spurs guard Derrick White said. "It’s the reason why she will just keep growing and growing and eventually become a head coach."

i just posted links of about a half dozen players and coaches IN THE SPURS ORG going out of their way speak about her credentials as head coach.

sorry, while i appreciate the rumors, they don't hold as much weight to me as actual quotes from real people (who frankly have 0 incentive to go our of their way to speak so positively). Read what @calvin natt posted about players ignoring her and read the quotes I've bolded. which do you believe?

I'm still all in on Becky. not swayed by anonymous rumors, especially those that are so much in contrast to everything people said in real life.

Can you reword that, please? What does that mean?

Brent Barry has been VP there for 3 years. Same advantage.

or... ya know, they think she's actually deserving of a head coaching gig seeing as how there's only 30 of them in the world and they don't want her to miss out?

since when did everyone get so cynical?

I think if she was really this bad the team would find out during the vetting process. I think Dame would call up LMA or DeRozan and get the 411.

My 2 sources in San Antonio say that Olshey won't pass away till he's 90.

That's only until your mysterious, Denny-like disappearance.

It would involve sex causing her conflict of interest, like she had with Tony Parker before becoming his boss, per the article I posted.

Why? What happened to caring about defense? The other interviews don't matter?

Funny. I was actually thinking the very same thing about the Spurs. Pop is all in on getting her hired somewhere. I wonder if it's because he doesn't want to fire a woman coach?

Like Stotts, D’Antoni has had a couple of outlier years where his teams were in the top 10 in defensive rating, but overall they have been shitty defensive teams. WHAT IN THE FUCK ARE WE LOOKING AT THIS GUY FOR?

I did simple defensive rating. It’s absolutely not the end all be all of determining defense, but it’s telling enough to wonder why a GM, who just fired and drove a bus over a beloved coach because of defense, would even consider hiring Mike D’Antoni

Of course a female coach could be criticized. A Black coach could be criticized. If, say, Billups gets the job and someone says he should never have substituted player X in this situation, fine. If someone says that stupid n----r should not have substituted player X in that situation, not fine. Same with Hammon or Staley. They would be NBA coaches. Period.
