I think a lot of the established players avoid going into the dunk contest, for fear of being typecast as just a "dunker." That would apply to Lebron and D-Wade, as they've already shown the League that they're among the most talented in the league. I remember VC used to complain about it regularily, at one point even proclaiming that he wouldn't dunk again (something like that). That's probably why the NBA looks to get contestants that can dunk, before they become really big.
