That is interesting... do you know how many 5* d-lineman are even in the Pac-12 this year? There aren't that many in the nation in any given year, and it seems like most of them end up in the SEC :) , so I can't imagine there were that many. I'm curious, though, and I'm not sure how to look that sort of thing up.

    Stomp...

I'm not saying that 3* players can't be all Pac-12 standouts but I can say that being at LSU/ Oregon I could see that their guys seemed larger than ours! That said, I'm sure all your theories and stats are right on and make ya very relevant here, but here's the bottom line.... We are 0-2 against the SEC in major games that recruits and voters watch. Having a few 5* recruits wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have would it? I mean as you've said, look how well our 3*'s have developed like Dion Jordan under the Duck Watch. Imagine what a few 5* recruits could do here? The Mamba certainly has shined his first year!! I'm pretty sure he was a 5* recruit.

I'd recommend Rivals since they have their top 100 and all that. This link you can sort by year and then position ranking.

    Rivals Top Position link

Thanks, Wheels. I know that 5*/4* depends on the service, but looking at the last few years:

    2010 5*'s:
    DTs: 2 (SEC=2)
    WDEs: 2 (SEC, Pac-12)
    SDEs: 3 (Pac-12, Big XII, Big 10)
    2009 5*'s:
DTs: 5 (SEC=2, ACC, Big XII, Big 10)
    WDEs: 2 (Pac-12, ACC)
    SDEs: 1 (Big XII)
    2008 5*'s:
    DTs: 2 (SEC, ACC)
    WDEs: 1 (Big XII)
    SDEs: 1 (ACC)
    2007 5*'s:
    DTs: 2 (SEC, ACC)
    WDEs: 2 (SEC, Big 10)
    SDEs: 2 (Pac-12, SEC)

So, adding the totals, we get:

    SEC: 9
    ACC: 5
    Pac-12: 4
    Big XII: 4
    Big 10: 3

This doesn't prove anything. I was just curious :)

People get way too enamored with how many stars a guy has next to his name. Some of my favorite Ducks have been guys that were lightly recruited.

Patrick Chung was a 2 star.

It seems silly to claim that you can accurately judge the size of players under a mass of pads and jerseys especially when they are never side by side. To me LSU's DLine seemed quicker & better

last week Oregon said thanks, but we're no longer interested to a high profile rivals *4 top 100 DT named Faith Ekakite. Why? Because they'd just landed the guy they wanted who is still currently unrated by rivals.

Last year Kelly openly mocked the recruiting sites for having Jake Fisher only ranked as a *3 while he was introducing the class. His quote was something along the lines of... if Jake Fisher isn't one of the best OLine prospects in the country I don't know what I'm doing as a football coach. Jake earned a ton of snaps this season while the two *4s from Arizona redshirted.

Who is better? A *2 Soph DT starts while the *4 Soph backs up yet gets 10 times the chatter here (Wade & Ricky). I could go on and on with examples demonstrating how silly it is to lay much on the projections of the recruiting sites. I use them more as an introduction to the kids and their story, but reserve real judgement for actual games. Certainly the odds are better if you land a highly rated kid, but I know the physical hierarchy/pecking order is hardly set in stone for guys at age 17. Hell, I grew 7" when I was 17. Having the right mental makeup seems paramount to succeeding in D1 ball too. Basically, you're welcome to your theories of the recruiting sites as gurus. I'm happy to be along for the ride that Chip is taking Duck fans on and feel he actually knows what he's doing

I haven't seen it on here, so I'll go ahead and post, sorry if it's old news. Oregon offers 4* 6'5" 322 pound OL Cedrick Poutasi yesterday. Poutasi was asked if the ducks offered too late and had this to say,

DJ Foster has eliminated us from contention.

Foster confirmed the news earlier this afternoon.

"After talking with my family I just don't want to go that far from home," Foster said. "I appreciate Oregon but I'm just going in another direction."

Also from what I'm hearing, Buckner's in-home visit with Chip Kelly went so well, he is no longer visiting Cal. I would say it's a about a 95% chance we land him.

Can't get them all. I'm not sure where Foster would fit in, either, because he's a bit undersized, and DAT has a stranglehold on the TZR position for at least two more years.

The NCAA should be checking into Cal right now. No way this program with a coach on the hot seat lands Shaq Thompson, Armistead, Foster and potentially McCarthy! NO WAY!! Not unless they are paying them......

that sounds like alot of the things some USC fans were saying about us, when we got DeAnthony, and then players like Lyerla who normally would have just gone to them.

I've read a couple of recruits noting that Cal's facilities are going to be the best in the nation when they're done. I think that one guy even said that they will "blow Oregon's out of the water" ... or something like that.

Cal has another big recruiting weekend this weekend. Darius Hamilton, DJ Foster, and Deforest Buckner were all planning on attending.

Right now Cal is sitting at about 13 recruits, so they started slowly but they seem to be swinging for the fences. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

True enough. But Cal is also alot closer to home for some of these kids. And its alot closer to major cities and attractions than Eugene. Geographically they are at more of an advantage.
