Worked for Mark Jackson. I'm sure for all of the good ones, there are bad ones. But a lot of the coaching is having the respect of your players, and getting assistants to do all the Xs and Os crap, or so it seems.

MJ apparently used his connections, of which he had many from all those years playing and doing TV color, to do a lot of informal interviewing and picking-of-brains with coaches, front office people, etc. for years. Not sure how much stock you can put into that translating into his success but he had his eye on coaching for a long time after his playing career.

I'd say MJ has a definite charisma advantage over Kidd, but I reckon Kidd is the more shrewd bball mind. Kidd is being hired by an owner who will likely go to any measures to support him with a great staff, much like Lacob did with MJ (Malone was reportedly higher paid than some head coaches). Kidd will also inherit a roster that has some talent while most rookie coaches start off getting the crappiest jobs around.

As others have been saying, there's no real advantage to taking on a retread coach that everyone knows is mediocre. Why not go for a guy who could be dynamite? Worst case is you'd have a lame duck coach, which you would have had anyway.

Exactly... do you think a sketchy Russian billionaire that once married a super model in a lavish wedding and then divorced her the next day just to win a childhood bet will be prudent with a relatively minor investment like the Brooklyn Nets head coaching position?

Great points all around, but why'd you have to keep calling Jackson, "MJ?" Until I picked up on the context clues, I thought you were talking about Jordan...

I definitely agree with you on all fronts about taking a risk on Kidd as a a head coach though. I'd also like to see how he does with Deron Williams. I think it could really workout great, actually. The only point guard in the league that I'd rather intrust a "QB" type role to is Chris Paul. I'm sure that with Kidd's expertise in playing that role to perfection throughout three different decades will be invaluable in constructing the Brooklyn offense next season.

    Cause fuck it thats why.

You'd rather entrust Deron to be the "QB" more than anyone besides Paul? Or Kidd? Deron was a damn great player but I've lost confidence in him since he went to NJ. I think hes slipped into the second or third tier of PGs. Its possible he could get that ability back if he gets in shape and Kidd crafts a great system around him, but hes going to be 29 in a few weeks too...we might have already seen his best basketball.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

    Per ESPN:

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio was asked if he'd heard the rumor about the Suns possibly shipping center Marcin Gortat to the Portland Trail Blazers and he responded: "If (Indiana forward/center) Cody Zeller drops to 10 (in the 2013 NBA draft), hear it could happen. Suns seem to love him."

The Blazers need a starting center and they will have enough salary cap room in July to accept Gortat's $7.72 million next season, so a simple swap of him for the draft rights to Zeller would work. Of course this hypothetical deal will blow up if Zeller is selected before the 10th pick.

The Suns could also take a huge gamble in the summer if they want to get rid of Gortat by working a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers for Andrew Bynum. Both teams can have enough room below the cap to do a deal where Gortat would head to the Sixers and Bynum would land with the Suns. Bynum's salary will be a lot higher than Gortat's, but it works because of the Suns cap room.

I'd take on Zeller and use our capspace on a wing instead of using both our assets (pick + space) on Gortat.

Zeller will be horrible. You win with defense and all league players, and he is neither. I'm not saying Gortat is either, but he will be a better defender than Zeller

Don't disagree with your opinion on Zeller entirely. Just saying that I hope we get better value out of our pieces than just Gortat.

Big question leading into trade season is whether Golden State wants to shed David Lee's salary. He'd be the homerun get for the Nets

I am a bit torn on Gortat. If you take his seasons with a P&R PG. He played 1 full season with Steve nash at PG and averaged 15/10/1.5 blk in 32 minutes. he shot .555 from the field and attempted 3.8 FT per game and had a PER of 21.2. Per 36 minutes, only Aldridge shot more on our team last year, and it was barely more

We could do a HELL of a lot worse

I am fine with getting Gordat, but since we are technically in rebuilding mode, I really want a young SG with that 10th pick that can grow with Lillard. Pope is growing on me, so if we can get him, Shabazz, or McCollum I would prefer it.
One of them will be available.

Then use the 11 mil to sign a center and Maynor.

That would be brilliant. Philly is desperate enough to get out from under the Bynum fiasco, they might be happy to come out of it with a second tier center. And only Phoenix's training staff could realistically resurrect Bynum's career.

There isnt a great FA center we can get this off season and I don't see us in a typical rebuild as much as a "put a team togethor to win so LA doesn't leave" mode which usually means trading for veterans.

How do you know? Dalembert, Kaman, and Pachulia are all UFAs aren't they? I don't think any of them will be highly sought after. Seems to me that signing one of them is realistic.

Not for Noel, but for McLemore, Tristan Thompson, Zeller and a 2014 1st? Might look at that....

I don't think anyone would classify them as "great", or even "good" though.
