Jesus. Ingles for anywhere between 10-15 is an overpay. I'd try to sign someone like Kyle Anderson instead.
I like Joe, but the knee worries me. Now if it's at a lower price that help maintain some flexibility, i'm all in. Cause it's not about the early on. It's about playoff time. And he should be full go by then. But i really like Slow MO. I have to believe that Memphis is keen on re-signing him though. And he probably would prefer to stay there.
Guys come on after years of going through free agency….. we can’t give A free agent from another team more than the MLE We have inglis bird rights so we can pay him more and go over the cap Paying inglis 10-15 mil would be very smart. You have to have salaries like that to make trades later. so you either give him that salary slot or you don’t have it at all
I'm more concerned that giving Joe that much could impact whether we have TPMLE or NTMLE. It's arguable that whoever we could sign with the NTMLE would be more valuable to this team than Joe + TPMLE. All depends on who's available and interested though. If Joe's healthy and ready to play, however, I'd want him to start at the 3 and wouldn't blink at a 12-15M deal. I'm just not expecting that.
No significant overpays which means we aren't continuing the Olshey tradition of bidding against ourselves which is nice. That should put us at between 136M and 138M for 12 players... if you count in 3.9M in dead space for Bledsoe and the 3.844 in dead space for Nicholson. At that point you have to question if the team wants to go into the tax. There's a rumor right now that we are vying for Thybulle which would mean absorbing his ~4.4M and sending out future draft considerations. That would take us to a place where if we just used the BAE to pick up a backup C and picked up a vet min PG we would have a full roster that came in under the tax. Dame, vet min PG (Austin Rivers) Ant, Hart, Shaedon, Keon Thybulle, Nas, Didi Grant, Justise, Trendon, Greg Nurk, BAE C (Chris Boucher) I don't think that starting SF spot would be a given in any way. I think there would be a pretty serious competition in training camp and preseason for that spot between Thybulle, Hart and Nas and could see any of the three winning it. Due to Ant getting all of the backup minutes at PG there should be about 30 minutes to earn at SG and 48 at SF. That could leave Nas, Thybulle and Hart with 20+ minutes a piece and still leave another ~15 minutes for Shaedon, should he be ready. That could be a competitive team but it doesn't scream, "taking it to the limit" or doing everything we can to "get to the peak" like Joe was saying at the last presser. So maybe we go into the tax using the full MLE and just try to get the guy who could have the most trade value at the deadline. We cut Didi and pick up some sort of deal with Ingles. Dame, Ant, Thybulle, Grant, Nurk, Hart, Nas, Justise, Ingles, Full MLE, Shaedon, Trendon, Keon, Greg and a vet min at whatever is the position of need probably gives us a lot more fire power to make a big splash at the trade deadline than the roster above... if we pick the right guy with the MLE and don't shit the bed (Derrick Jones Jr.). We've got one week before shit gets real. Fun Times! Go Blazers!!!
Agreed. No team would give Nurk more than the full MLE. Why pay him over $12 million per season? We traded away 4 rotational players at the deadline and effectively received 2 back. Now we're using up all the space under the tax without bringing in a 3rd or 4th rotational player. We got off the Neil road of purgatory, but now are headed right back to where we started.
Here are the projected numbers with Nurk/Ant's presumed extensions and Ingles at 12.5 million. 6.4 under the apron with 13 guaranteed roster spots means we can still use the TPMLE. If we wanted to use the full MLE, we can achieve that by dumping Bledsoe or some of our smaller deals (Louzada/Brown).
This looks like a play in team. Contracts for Ant, Grant, and Nurk that don't have much if any positive trade value. Still out a future draft pick to Chicago. Less young talent than most rebuilding teams, less veteran talent than all the contenders. The only hope for one day contending is Shaedon becomes a superstar. If he doesn't this team is destined for many years of mediocrity.
No doubt. I didn't think he outperformed his last deal. So the most I would have given him would have been 14 to start and made the years after that team options. That being said, there were a lot crazier numbers being thrown around in here so this overpay isn't the nightmare I was fearing. With Ant I read something that said the Mavs were ready to offer him a similar deal, so that one isn't bad at all.
I wonder what room is under the tax? I'd think ownership aims to stay under the tax, not just under the apron.
The number is there. 270k into the tax. I'm sure depending on how they structure some of the contracts, they can be under the tax if they wanted to. Seems like a slap in the face to Dame though. If you're trying to compete this year you better be in the tax or else WTF are you even doing?
This look right? We have about 12 mil to go before hitting the tax line, but still have space to fit in both the MLE, the BAE, and Thybulle before getting hard capped at the apron.
No way in hell i start Thybulle over Nas. Nas' game was really coming on before the injury. I see Nas being every bit as good a player as Ant when it's all said and done. I'm not stunting his development with less minutes.
