I know that All Star games have always been a little iffy.... but the players aren't trying at all. There is zero effort.

I would rather watch an All-Star team play against the All-hustle team or something like that. Have players come out and embarrass them.

No one wants to risk injury for a meaningless game.

I have not watched the All-Star game in years. It is absolutely pathetic. Even watching a college football spring game where the play gets blown dead when a defender gets within 5 yards of the QB is more entertaining.

    Then don't play it.

These guys play a ton of games in the offseason. I think that's a bullshit excuse if that's what they're saying.

I wouldn't call it meaningless when it is actively devaluing the NBA as a brand. The players might be under the impression that it is meaningless but they are wrong.

Exactly. They play harder at the summer UCLA runs and the Lifetime Athletic runs than they did for the All-Star game last night.

Move the All-Star game to after the season. Give the players a short break during the middle of the season.

I want to see the All-NBA team against an All-Star team.

No one wants to play this game during the season or after a long NBA season. It just doesn't make dollars and cents and rest those aching muscles and give you time at home with your families.

Probably the best thing the NBA could do is some kind of expanded skills weekend and incentivize it with a nice cash bonus or at least a healthy donation to the non-profit of the winning player's choice.

SLC has no more restaurants than PDX and Im not even sure more hotels overall. I used to cover Utah is nice but limited in things to do but their political leaders, owners and people have stepped up in concert to see their town to the NBA. Portlands political leaders, ones and fans don't seem in concert enough to bring about such an event. Shit, we have the Gorge the coast the mountains, bend and Seattle or just a few hours away.

I disagree. They play games in the offseason to stay in shape and work on skills. That's not a necessity during the season. The excuse makes tons of sense. The timing and/or the fact that it has no actual significance for the year is the problem.

SLC has about twice the number of hotel-rooms that Portland has. I would agree about the restaurants tho.

I think that SLC is somewhat more of a tourist destination than Portland, first, it is a center for Mormons and second, it has a lot of winter sports activities, so it's not a surprise it has a lot more hotel rooms.

Depends what all you put in there and how you market it. If you do it as a fan fest of some sort, I think they could make it work.

So you don't think Portland is a legit tourist destination? I disagree

I think it is less than SLC for the reasons mentioned above. SLC is a religious center for an entire sect of religion, just by that, it will get a lot of traffic. Add the winter sports element and this explains it.

Portland, as lovely as it is, has less a of a standout feature that draws people, which is why there are less hotel rooms.

Big cities become tourist destinations if they have lovely weather related features (warm weather and beach or skiing resorts), great entertainment centers (Las Vegas, for example) or historical / cultural attractions. I guess they can also have a lot of rooms simply if they are very big.

SLC has two of these (cultural attraction for a subset of the population and winter ski). Portland has none. It's not a surprise that SLC has twice as many hotel rooms.

There is no politics in building hotels generally, if the market supports it, the hotels will be built because people can make money on it. Despite the fact that Portland (the city) is 2-3 times bigger than SLC, it has 1/2 the hotel rooms. That's your answer right there.
