Tankathon is just presenting box score stats in a different, more simplistic and more visually appealing way with some non stat inclusions like wingspan and draft age...

I wouldn't give them much weight.

And honestly when you are taking exact numbers and translating them how they do, they become even more misleading than those stats already are without context.

 

It's strictly a statistical comparison of those looking at being drafted (I believe over many years of history). Are you above average or below average for those traits as an NBA prospect?
McNeeley didn't have a good statistical season...

 

I agree that stats have their limitations, but Tankathon actually has a lot more than box score stats. I'm not sure what your last sentence means?
I know that guys like Kevin Durant and Chris Paul had outstanding stats and they became outstanding players in the NBA. I'm just saying that i find their system helpful.

A lot more than traditional box score stats, but these are still stats that are translated from cbb ref's advanced stats page with some quick and simple formulas to get things like ast%/usg% and so forth.

And yes good stats really matter, but presenting them this way isn't adding anything...it's just doing it in a different way that gives you a quick wholistic look of their advanced stats. But whenever you boil down exact numbers to a scale of +4 to -4 and stack them against each other unweighted, with no adjustments made for how weak or strong they are in that stat relative to their position, age, role etc...things get murky pretty quick. Especially when a lot of these stats are heavily affected by teammate quality (off and def rating, any winshare or BPM metric etc.)

 

I'm so tempted to make a cut up of Rasheer Fleming's possessions when he's forced to drive a closeout or create anything for himself...but I don't want to come off as too much of a hater. He's a cool developmental story and he does offer some intriguing NBA traits on the surface.

His size and length stand out and I buy him as a solid shooter who got a lot of reps shooting in different situations off a variety of footwork and actions. He also really does have a nice feel on how to relocate and cut off the ball...but man....where the NBA is going and how deep the talent pool is right now, I struggle to see where his limited skill set fits on most teams and is valued at a rotational level. Dribbling....passing....creating and maintaining advantages are valued so highly from every position on the floor minus the center position and I'm having a hard time not seeing him as a huge negative in all those areas offensively. Even as a finisher I think he's just ok despite his size and length. Not crazy explosive and actually can be pretty underwhelming at times, same with his strength...he looks strong but you really see him struggle to carve out space and gets bumped off his spot a lot against A10 athletes.

And despite the stocks and rebounding numbers, I have real issues with his mobility which in an NBA where you are asked to cover so much space with the talent and shooting on the floor, I worry that his struggles changing direction will limit his defensive versatility enough that he can't hang his hat on that end either.

I'm rooting for him just like I do with all these players, but I continue to not see the vision with him.

 

Agreed. As I dug into his play more, I"m not seeing it with him.

Is all of this moot? If we don’t land the Flagg this pick will 100% be moved for a PF upgrade IMO.

 

I think Scoot has improved a lot at playing off the ball. He needs a good mix of both. Preferably in a system that has flow that produces both naturally. He's good attacking the catch downhill and his catch-and-shoot three improved a ton last year. But yeah he needs more on-ball reps.

 

I think Flagg is a much more functional athlete than Bailey. His first step is better, and he can play through contact better as well. Plus his passing, defense and overall feel are miles better. Flagg even shot better from 3 and the free-throw line. Flagg is super well-rounded and I don't think he'd make us give up on Scoot whatsoever. I feel like we're too used to iso-heavy offenses where it has to be one guy doing something each possession instead of these guys playing off each other.

 

Two weeks until the lotto. I'm not holding my breath or anything but I'll still have my fingers crossed and be watching.

I actually think Queen could be interesting in tandem with Clingan.
