I accept you and your tendency to publicly masturbate.

But if you really want to tread down this path, I'm game.

Let's talk about child brides. It's a custom that happens in certain societies all over the world. Age of consent and what constitutes an adult are arbitrary from society to society, so I don't think we can make a judgment on the age factor. I do think that 8 is probably the youngest that any society will likely tolerate in 2013. I know that many societies that have child brides won't go younger than puberty. Yemen being the exception doesn't surprise me; it is a pretty unique place in a lot of respects.

Raping the girl to death? Nowhere is that accepted in the wider culture. Making fun of people who try to be all-accepting by trying to argue that raping an 8 year old to death should be celebrated as cultural diversity (and thus making a super compelling argument against multi-cultural acceptance as a practice) is bullshit.

Why are you so close-minded? Why don't you accept equal rights for all? While this practice is repugnant to you, it wasn't to the people who were involved. Celebrate diversity!

I wonder if countries that think that homosexuality is disgusting would see us in the same light as us with this atrocity?

No but I like how you're equating cultural acceptance to justifying rape

Rage? This interaction is creating feelings that are the opposite of rage in me.

Trolling the idea of cultural understanding? Not shocked that brings a smile to your face.

I agree that we need to judge and get rid of all these stupid ass customs, but not just from the brown religions, but from all religions. Christian shit also needs to be gotten rid of, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, all sorts of religious customs that degrade others, minimize freedom, need to be cut out from society. I was just learning about how in India if you are a Brahman woman and you are widowed, you are sent away from your house to get your head shaved and live in a house with other widows, never to see your family again. This is even the case for 6 year olds who were married when they were 4, and have never met their husbands, they spend their entire lives shipped off and living destitute, often forced into prostitution. There are all sorts of religious based customs that are screwed up. You go down the list of most godless nations, and they are the ones with the highest standards of living, best education, and most just laws. Religion sucks!

I'm confused and confounded by those who want people to react to these situations but not to the Syria situation. Don't get me wrong, I don't know where I sit. But to feel so strongly to admonish, judge and/or punish a culture that allows this type of behavior that is different from American culture and then wants to step aside with Syria.... I realize you cannot win.

I'm curious. It's an epiphany. Don't hate. I'm pretty much at a loss here. I mean, do we react, do we not react and accept cultures that are vastly different? Is it okay as long as its under the American umbrella?

You can admonish a culture for wedding eight year olds without going to war. I don't think anyone is saying that we need topple the Yemenis by force because we think 40 year olds shouldn't fuck eight year olds to death.

But perhaps I'm not the one that should answer, I like judging cultures and religions that victimize or degrade people. I think most people do. We just shouldn't judge things that aren't negatively impactful as being negative just because they are different.

Hey man, I have two young daughters, so I disagree with this type of BS (I would without having young kids). But where do we draw the line for interference?

Depends on what type of interference. Our leaders could speak out at a pretty low level. If things like this happen on a very regular basis and hundred or thousands of kids are being fucked to death than perhaps we consider stronger interference, like withholding aid until they crack down, or if they don't receive aid perhaps a trade embargo. For us to consider a military action I would say either they would have to be sending their rapists here, or they would have to be systematically doing these types of things to the point of tens or even hundreds of thousands of children were being killed this way. The bar to interfere militarily should be quite damn high.
