Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Be safe Brian. Finally heard from some of my in-laws. They fled to the mountains to get away from the tsunami. It's a really really bad one.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan BTW, hearty "well done" to whoever did the earthquake-proofing at the airport. After about 6 hours of quiet, the small aftershocks have started back up. Nothing like before, and we're pros now..."nah, that probably wasn't over a 5..." :smh:
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan thanks for the thoughts, guys....I'm near the windows but I've pulled myself into a little cubby underneath some seating. I should be warm and semi-safe from falling glass and debris, but close enough to outside that if stuff starts collapsing I can make a 15' jump to the tarmac.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Glad you're OK, Brian. Sounds like Northeast Portland is safe. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Oregon-advises-coastal-rb-1669794559.html?x=0&.v=1 Oregon advises coastal residents to evacuate SEATTLE (Reuters) - Oregon Emergency Management on Friday advised coastal residents to evacuate before 7 a.m. local time due to the risk of a tsunami. The massive 8.9 magnitude quake in Japan triggered tsunami warnings for most of the Pacific basin, including northern California and Oregon. A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office said no residents were being forced to leave. She said schools would be closed along the coast and the National Guard was on standby.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Stay safe Brian. We just got married in Saettle and two of our guests flew in from Japan...and back yesterday morning. My wife's mom hasn't been able to get a hold of them or any of their other relatives over there (spread out from Shikoku to Osaka, Tokyo and Hokaido). Do you know if only Honshu got hit hard or the other islands too?
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Not sure if this will help or not. Google Japan Earthquake People Finder
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Where are our military bases on Japan and were any of them hit by the tsunami? I haven't heard anything yet.

Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Earthquakes are small potatoes, compared to the irresponsible insanity of building nuclear power plants. http://openchannel.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/03/11/6245862-2007-japan-quake-was-a-wake-up-call-on-nuclear-safety
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan tell that to families who have lost loved ones in the last 12or so hours. I'm sure the people who lost a father, son, daughter, or mother all agree with you
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan How many total deaths are there from Nuclear power plants? I'm thinking other energy production sources cause more deaths due to pollution, lung disease, etc.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan I'm not arguing that. I'm just pointing out its disrespectful to those affected in the last day by this catastrophe.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Well, not many, because we all keep handguns in the house. My dad once killed a nuclear power plant breaking into his place. barfo
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan You and the media kept calling the local tidal wave a tsunami. When the epicenter is nearby, that's not a tsunami. It has to travel a very long distance to be a tsunami. You were in your panic mode, so I didn't bother correcting a crazy man. In that last post, you seemed to correct yourself and say the tsunami was the thing that might happen, not the thing that was happening.
Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan Cnn said they were okay. One of my friends is stationed over there and seems to be fine.
A tsunami is simply a large wave caused by a large displacement of water. Distance travelled is irrelevant.
