    Are you serious or just......

You think people who have been horribly scarred to the tune of millions of dollars should look like that? What's you hurting your back in a car crash worth? Trillions?

I'd hate to know how much money they would deserve if they looked sad. If I were on a jury and saw that picture I'd vote for punitive damages from the school and the police to them in the amount of a penny.

What makes them any better than people who get a love tap from behind while driving and then act like they are disabled for life?

Sure, they didn't cause the crash but they don't deserve to get rich off of it.

I'm tired of schools and police getting sued for stuff you and I would just get fired for. It's bullshit and a money grab.

It is interesting though, because Dviss was saying that a white kid would have been treated differently, and he's probably right. I don't think any of the white kids who were suspended for some type of gun related BS (bubble gun, finger gun, or pop tart gun) were invited to the White House. The anti-gun sentiment is much much stronger with the media, and I think most people are willing to write it off because "you can't be too careful about guns and schools." blah blah blah

I don't really deny that that is a valid possibility, but I think this is ignoring the fact that this kid made this as an engineering project, and the invites to the White House and to engineering camps/programs are primarily because of that. Of course the publicity of the likely discrimination involved helped with that, but I don't think you can discount that Ahmed seems to be a very talented kid. It's very different to a kid bringing a toy gun to school IMO.

Well, it seems like most of the stories about toy guns involved kids that were much younger. Kids that were six, seven, or younger. So in that regard, Ahmed is different because he's only a few years off from college.

I brought a pocket knife to school in 1st grade and was caught using it on branches at recess. Luckily the recess monitor (parent volunteer?) knew my mom so she dealt with it discreetly and I was punished by my parents but not the school.

So because other people named Ahemed have committed crimes, it justifies putting handcuffs on a school age student with no history of problems because of his name? And no reason to believe he had a bomb, once it was checked? That is just wrong.

Not sure about you, but I am darn tired of being punished and loosing privileges and freedoms due to the criminal acts of others. Teachers and law enforcement officers are overreacting across the nation. Not just against certain groups.

Even bent over old white men like myself are being treated unfairly by our enforcement officers. An 85 year old friend and myself had a recent encounter with an enforcement officer that overreacted so badly (for no reason other than to puff out his chest), a very nice 77 year old grandmother that watched everything said to us we should have kicked his ass for his bad behavior and to teach him some manners. (My guess is, the enforcement office was trying to provoke us into making an aggressive action that he could respond to with force, and my friend had the same thoughts).

The people we put in charge of protecting us are now becoming the problem and overreacting by abusing their power. It is showing up everywhere, not just in minority neighborhoods.

I guess Southern white boys should be all suspect because one shot up a church. And white male college students all suspect because some shot up schools. If I said Christians were all suspect because of the ones who bomb clinics, kill doctors, and attack gay people the site would, justfiably, be in an uproar. There is no better safe than sorry. This was clearly NOT a bomb. If it was they call bomb squad, don't put it in desk drawer. They were stupid and doubled down. Like MM is being. They interrogated him over and over because he kept telling the truth. It was a clock. A fucking clock.

White boys kinda ARE suspect because of those things you mentioned. There are numerous examples of kids being suspended or expelled because of our societies fear of school shootings. This could absolutely be an example of racial profiling and discrimination, BUT let's not pretend like this kind of overreaction is limited to boys of Middle Eastern descent. I linked a bunch of articles a few posts up, and that was without even really trying. The issue is the zero tolerance policy by schools, and the fear culture that is prevalent in our society. Whether it's a boy like Ahmed with what they perceive as a bomb, or a white kid named Chuck who makes his fingers into the shape of a gun, there is a very real issue right now with how we deal with children and perceived threats of violence.

Don't forget, all young white men in a frat or who play sports are rapists!

It has expanded out from that. I see a lot of stories about men being accused of stalking simply because they're walking behind a woman. I read one guys account of how he was walking behind a woman, she thought he was following her so she ran into a building. He just happened to be walking to work and she ran into his building. As he was walking in, she was telling security about how he was following her. Stuff like that. Men can't be alone with little kids. If you happen to be sitting in a park near a field where kids are playing sports, you're a pedophile. Our society is being overcome by fear. It's getting out of control.

His Dad is an activist lawyer, isn't he? Isn't that what activist lawyers do for a living?

I'm not convinced it was planned in advance, but I am skeptical...

Just wondering, how exactly should they look when taking a picture of themselves?

Yeah, I'm sure if a dog had died he would've been sad in a picture. And if he had just gotten a BJ from a classmate of his, he'd probably look like he just had a BJ.

Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China.

In all seriousness, his dad ran for President of Sudan or some shit like that. Also was involved in the trial of the guy who burned the Koran in Florida somehow. Fancies himself as some kind of activist.
