I'm just curious, who is the "franchise player" for Detroit? Is Dwyane Wade a franchise player? Was Kevin Garnett a franchise player while he was with Minnesota, and is he a franchise player now? I think people are putting too much emphasis on having that one superstar. Basketball is a team game. In my mind Tim Duncan is pretty much the only player in the league who by himself makes his team a championship contender, and even he has had major help from players like Parker and Ginobli, and a great coach/GM in Poppovich. The Nets should build something like what the Pistons have: great starters at every position and outstanding depth off the bench, with players who complement each other, and competent coaching. The Nets don't need to be blown up, the. Here's what they need: 1. Add one or two wing shooters off the bench 2. Add a legitimate scoring threat in the low post (perhaps through development of a current Net) 3. Take playmaking opportunties away from Jefferson and give them to Harris, Williams and Carter 4. Get competent coaching With just these things happening, I believe the Nets can be serious contenders for the conference championship for years to come.

Our best opportunity to get a franchise type player within the Kidd era passed when KG was traded to the Celtics. Look, there are only a select few players in this league worth building around. Kobe, LeBron, DHoward, KG, Dwyane Wade to name a few. The only way to get one of these players, is to a. Suck enough to get a high lottery pick. B. Have enough money to entice them to come. C. Have enough pieces to either rip off somebody or take advantage of a bad situation (i.e. KG). Until we do one of those three things, talking about a franchise player is useless. The way we've been playing it looks like we're going to be mediocre at the very best. And it may be a pipe dream, but really our best shot at one of these players is LeBron 2010.
