Martin Kaymer insists his outstanding Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship record counts for nothing when the tournament begins on Thursday.

The German won at Abu Dhabi Golf Club in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and was runner-up in 2009, but believes the course changes in recent years have eroded any psychological advantage he may have had.

“It's always a good start to the season,” said the US Open Champion.

“My first tournament of the year on The European Tour has been here in Abu dhabi since 2007, so not quite from the beginning, but for the ninth time now.

“I've had success here, but the golf course has changed quite a lot. It's tough to say if it became more difficult or easier.

Martin Kaymer rekindled his fondness for the Abu Dhabi Championship by rolling in 10 birdies to shoot an 8-under 64 in the first round on Thursday, giving the German a 1-stroke lead in an event he has won three times.

Living up to his tag of the "King of Abu Dhabi," Kaymer showed the form on the greens that brought him titles in the desert in 2008, '10 and '11, and looked energized after time away from golf over Christmas.

"I putted very well," Kaymer said. "Ten birdies? I'm not sure I have done that in my golf career."

Martin Kaymer turned what promised to be an exciting weekend duel with Rory McIlroy into a procession at the Abu Dhabi Championship.

Seeking a fourth title in eight years in Abu Dhabi, Kaymer shot a 7-under 65 in the third round on Saturday to extend his overnight lead from one stroke to six. He moved to 20-under 196 overall -- a record-low total here after 54 holes.

Renowned as one of golf's best front-runners, two-time major winner Martin Kaymer stood on the sixth tee at the Abu Dhabi Championship holding a 10-shot lead in the final round and with records in his sights.

Then came one of the biggest turnarounds the sport has seen.

Within 90 minutes, the normally unflappable Kaymer dropped six shots in eight holes and got swallowed up by Gary Stal as the No. 357-ranked Frenchman mounted an improbable surge to win his first European Tour title Sunday.

Gary Stal overturned an eight shot deficit to deny Martin Kaymer and claim a maiden European Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

The two-time Challenge Tour winner closed with a brilliant seven under par 65 for a 19 under total, which proved just enough on an exhilarating final day.

“It's really crazy and I’m very happy to win this tournament,” said Stal, whose final-day comeback equalled the largest on the 2014 Race to Dubai.
