Understandable. I am for a specific law enforcement degree with very specific classes. Of course there would be some basic core classes as well, like rudimentary math, language, etc. But, like a nursing degree, would cater to the specific trade of law enforcement.
"Mindlessly" enforcing the law is also huge part of the problem. Most situations do not require the use of force. Currently we mindlessly apply force and punishment to every law enforcement situation. That's not effective, hence it's not acceptable.
My good friend’s dad used to own the ambulance service in one of the larger (lol) towns here in Wyoming. He fought for YEARS to make it mandatory for the local police to be CPR/First Aid certified. Apparently there aren’t many departments around the country that require this. The police fought against it hard and my buddy’s dad was more or less ostracized by the the time it was all said and done (he didn’t succeed). What a bunch of fucking babies. Police are literally first responders, they may be on the scene before EMTs in many cases, and they fought tooth and nail to avoid a one day training session. I’ve had to take CPR/first aid MULTIPLE times just to be able to step onto oilfield or mining projects and these babies can’t make the time to learn a couple skills that DIRECTLY apply to their job. It’s crazy something like that wouldn’t be required universally across the country.
My cousin’s son is a member of the Tigard Police Department. Supposedly they have been told they no longer have to do traffic stops……..or respond to calls for assistance (from minorities in particular) because of the potential for escalation (for lack of a better term). Supposedly, regardless of how valid a reason there might be for pulling someone over, in today’s climate people are too quick to play either the police misconduct card or the race card. And current times require they be investigated, regardless of validity. The time and effort required to deal with that kind of bullshit doesn’t recoup the cost of the citation. So they keep the cops free and available for the “serious” stuff. I have no real clue how accurate this info might be, but my cousin swears it is so……
Growing up in NE Portland, I saw how police treated my friends when we were young....... in spite of this, I joined the Army and became a Military Policeman. Didn't become a civilian cop after I got out, wanted to go in a different direction. Shit needs to get fixed, but I have to disagree with my man D. I have about 6 friends who are Portland police officers who grew up in my neighborhood, quality individuals who have worked too hard to get bunched up with the shitheads out there who DO deserve the hate! I'm a big on "Not all people are this or that" My son is considering becoming an officer to try and change shit....and he marched last summer with Dame on the bridge.....I can tell you my son is NO bastard.
Now can we get back to talking about how the Lakers will finish above our Blazers in the standings this season.
I have a brother in law that’s a retired Portland Homicide defective and he’s one of the good guys and he been there for many families of victims and attended the funerals. He really one of the nicest guys Ive known and like to help anyone in need.
