As some of my fellow Zeros may (or may not) remember, for the past year I've been planning the Great American Road Trip. After scheming, plotting, budgeting and squirming impatiently for over a year, departure day arrives tomorrow. Shit finally gets real. Other than California and Washington (been there, done those ad nauseum) my goal is to hit everyone of the remaining lower 48 states. I may not spend a whole lot of time in some states, but I still will be able to say I've been there. I hope to be gone until the end of July, but if my best laid plans go astray for whatever reason (health, tired of motel rooms, I miss the dog too much, whatever) I'm not too proud to come home, satisfied that I gave it a try....... I'm not going to a whole lot of the "usual" places. If you want to see photos of statues and monuments, stick to the political threads. I'd like to stay on the secondary roads as much as possible and I'd like to get acquainted with the locals wherever I end up at the end of a day. Cold beer is always an excellent social lubricant. I have few rigid plans or destinations, so most days I'll point the car in whatever direction sounds good after my morning coffee. I'll be alone for a good part of the trip but will have family (including BG) and friends along here and there as they become available. My wife will meet me on the East Coast and travel with me for up to a month. So............. If anyone is interested, you can follow my blog. The address is; Drivingmrdavey.wordpress.com And if you're not interested, no biggie, as I won't know the difference.........too, if any non Oregon resident forum members happen to notice I'm in their neck of the woods and want to hook up for a Blazer discussion, I'll be happy to buy the beer. And I'll still be checking out the forum on a regular basis (especially at draft time). Anyway, I just wanted to put the blog out there in case someone wanted to piggyback on an old guy's dreams..... See you folks down the road!
You can grab this at an office on the way out of town - http://www.wcnc.com/news/local/seni...for-only-10-but-not-for-much-longer/431685016
You hitting up El Paso or Key West at all? I'll be going to both this summer. Interested in some of the perspectives.
Stopping at John Day to pick one up. The Park Services website doesn't like Apple, so I'll just buy it in person......
This sounds wicked cool. I'm incredibly envious. Your blog has now been bookmarked. I plan on checking it regularly.
Neither destination is on the list. In Texas I'll be driving from the top of the panhandle down to San Antonio and Austin, then up through Texarkana on my way elsewhere. But I'll let you know how Turkey TX and Clarendon TX are, as I'll spend 3 days in that area. And I'm only going into Florida as far as Pensacola, just to say I've been there. I hear Key West is the bomb but the downside is that you have to drive through the entire state of Florida to get there.....
If feels like these two threads should be merged. http://www.sportstwo.com/threads/place-to-stay-in-portland.312463/
Awesome.....In NJ visit Princeton and Point Pleasant. Up Rt.35 visit Bellmawr where the beautiful college chics adore their bodies on the beach. Western NJ is like Oregon with puny mountains. Eat Tomato Pie, canoli, really good bread, dine at any Greek Diner (We have more then anyone else) and give the finger to the NY drivers that crowd the road. Pick up an edition of Weird NJ at a head/tattoo shop and discover the real NJ. And make sure you have plenty of SRV to enlighten your wandering mind on the road.
The great thing about doing this at this time in my life is the internet. Yes, I have checked out that site and numerous others. Great stuff and a big help with the planning. BG talked about hitting the bourbon trail but he is unlikely to be with me during that part of the trip. I'll probably check out a distillery or two if I see them. It would be kind of a waste of Kentucky not to.....
It's going to be hilarious when you have to cut your trip short to make it back in time for the Blazers championship parade.
Cheap eats?????? Dawg, a huge part of the reason I'm doing this is the regional food. Eating is a large portion of my budget. And @stampedehero just gave me even more to shoot for.....
And I will absolutely guarantee you I acquire at least one speeding ticket in every state on the way home for that! And worth every penny.
